Assignment #7 - Exam #2 Redo

Spring 2015

This assignment is due on Tuesday, April 14th at the beginning of class no late assignments
will be accepted. Work ALL problems.
Problem 1 (25 points): Magnetic Boundary Conditions: A cylindrical piece of material with
permeability 1 is surrounded by a second cylindrical material with permeability 2. At all
points inside the center cylinder the magnetic flux density is given as
= 1 + 1 + 1
Along the cylindrical interface between the two materials, there is a surface current density given
by
= +
Using the boundary conditions for magnetic materials, determine the magnetic flux density, 2,
2 , just across the interface in the material with permeability 2.
and the magnetic field intensity,

Problem 2 (25 points): Static Magnetic Field: A wire carrying current Io runs from = to
the origin along the y-axis and then from the origin to = along the x-axis. Use the BiotSavart Law to determine the magnetic flux density at the point indicated in the figure.

Problem 3 (25 points): Dielectric Boundary Conditions. A point charge Q sits in a material
with permittivity 1 on the z-axis a distance h above an interface with a second material with
permittivity 2. There are no other free charges present. Using the boundary conditions for

Problem 4 (25 points): Magnetic Forces. An infinitely long wire carries current I1 running up
the z-axis as shown in the figure below. A second infinitely long wire carrying current I2 also
runs in the z-direction a distance r1 from the first wire, but, the wire has three extra segments
forming the rectangular notch shown in the figure. The second wire and all three segments of the
notch lie in the x-z plane. Determine the force exerted by the current I1 on the current in each of
the three segments of the notch. Also specify the net force on the three segments combined.
