Mean

The mean (or average) of a set of data values is the sum of all of the data
values divided by the number of data values. That is:
How to remember- add up all the numbers then divide by the
amount of numbers you have
Mean= Sum of all numbers
Amount of numbers
Example 1:
The marks of seven students in a mathematics test with a maximum possible
mark of 20 are given below:
15
13
18
16
14
17
12
Find the mean of this set of data values.
Solution:
Mean= Sum of all numbers
Amount of numbers
Step One: 15+13+18+16+14+14+17+12
7
Step Two: 107
7
Step Three: Mean= 15

The median of a set of data values is the middle value of the data set when it
has been arranged in ascending order. That is, from the smallest value to the
highest value.
How to remember- sort out all the numbers from small to large, count
how many you have then find the number in the middle, Median is
Middle
Example 2:
The marks of nine students in a geography test that had a maximum possible
mark of 50 are given below:
47
35
37
32
38

35

Find the median of this set of data values.

Solution:
Arrange the data values in order from the lowest value to the highest value:

37

38

39

47

The fifth data value, 36, is the middle value in this arrangement.

Median = 36
Mode
The mode of a set of data values is the value(s) that occurs most often.
How to remember- find the number that you can see occurring the
most.
Example 4
Find the mode of the following data set:

48

44

48

45

42

49

48

Solution:
The mode is 48 since it occurs most often.

Line graphs
-

Line graphs are used to show change over time.

Line graphs ALWAYS have a title and a label for each axis.
Line graphs have two axes. There is an x axis and a y axis.
The x axis is horizontal and its job is to tell you how far from the origin the

point is.
The y axis is vertical and it measures the variables (or the things that

change).
Line graphs also have an origin.
The origin is the point where the two axes come together.
On a number line, the origin starts with a 0.
Line graphs also include a line of best fit.
The line of best fit shows the general direction that a group of points seem

to be heading.
The line of best fit is drawn into the graph only when all of the numbers

have been plotted on the graph.

The line of best fit is drawn diagonally through the points on the line

graph.
When drawing a line of best fit, try to have the line as close as possible to
all points with an equal number of points on either side.

Example 1: The table below shows daily temperatures for New York City, recorded for 6 days, in
degrees Fahrenheit.

The data from the table above has been summarized in the line graph below.

A line is then drawn to the next point in order of time, day or small to large

Activity Two:
For this activity, you will need to place this raw
data into the table.
1. Last week, the temperatures were:
Monday: 20C
Tuesday: 20C

Days of the

Temperature

week

Wednesday: 20C
Thursday: 18C
Friday: 15C
Saturday: 17C
Sunday: 18C

For this question, you must write the titles of
each column.

3. Average rainfall in 2014.

For this activity, you need to put the raw data into a table which you will draw
yourself. Remember that you will need a title for each column!
Activity Three:

Using the data that you have put into tables, you will create three line

graphs, that is one for each set of data.

For your line graphs remember you will need a title on both of your axes
and a title for your graph!
