GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

Programme 2014
Introduction
The UNISA dream to recruit experienced and skilled academics and researchers that are self-starters. But this dream conflicts with reality. How can
organizations meet the needs of today and prepare the workforce of the future? One solution is to develop a quality staff development program. This manual
attempts to give a detailed and yet practical guide for departments (UNISA) and the Graduate Development Fellows (Fellow).
What Is A Graduate Development Fellowship Program?
The Graduate Development Fellowship Program is a carefully monitored work or service experience in which postgraduate students will be given specific
learning outcomes and will be expected to reflect actively on what they are learning throughout the fellowship programme. The duration of this programme will
be for one year initially, and renewable annually depending on annually depending on a demonstration of academic progress and a demonstration of progress in
gaining expertise in research and teaching. The programme will be part of an educational program and carefully monitored and evaluated for academic credit
(studies towards a formal postgraduate qualification) and teaching and research skills development.
What distinguishes this programme from a short-term appointment (Post graduate student) is that an intentional learning agenda is structured into the
experience. Learning activities will include
Conducting research
o Designing research problems and research questions
o Data collection
o Research methodology
o Proposal writing
o Report writing
o Data analysis
o Qualitative vs quantitative methodologies
o Preparing research budgets and research reports

o Conducting ODL research

Conducting Teaching and Learning
o Designing learning outcomes
o Designing appropriate assessment practices
o Observations, reflection, and evaluation built around formative and summative assessment practices and procedures.
o Designing web pages on myUnisa
o Designing video clips
o Writing handbooks or manuals
o Designing posters, charts, graphs
o Developing presentations
o Compiling technical reports
o Creating academic lesson plans
o Conducting training packages

An effort will be made to establish a reasonable balance between the fellows learning outcomes and those of UNISA. The fellowship is designed to promote
academic, career and personal development of fellows.
How will the Graduate Development Fellowship Benefit UNISA?
By implementing the Graduate Development Fellowship Programme for the next five years, the following benefits will accrue to UNISA:
Year round source of highly motivated pre-professionals
New perspectives to old problems brought by the fellows
Quality candidates recruited for future academic pool
Opportunity for professional and academic staff to pursue a joint project
Opportunity to identify long-term employees using a flexible, cost-effective program
UNISAs image in the education sector is enhanced as she contributes expertise to the sector.
