Strategic Planning ISTE Standard 1.

2 Reflection
The SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis was completed for
ITEC 7410 Instructional Technology Leadership, and provides an analysis of the ISTE Essential
Conditions at Madison County High School. I collected data from the school improvement plan
and the technology survey I administered for the development of the shared vision paper (found
here)
The SWOT Analysis demonstrates my ability to facilitate the design and development of a
technology infused strategic plan. To create a technology-infused strategic plan, the first step
must be to determine where the school currently stands with regard to technology integration..
For this SWOT analysis, the desired outcomes are the ISTE Essential Conditions for effective
technology implementation. In the SWOT analysis, I analyze eight of those essential conditions,
including effective uses of technology embedded in standards-based, student-centered learning,
shared vision, planning for technology, equitable access, skilled personnel, ongoing professional
learning, technical support, and curriculum framework, and discuss how Madison County High
School is meeting or striving to meet each of the essentials of effective technology
implementation.
The artifact also demonstrates my ability to facilitate the implementation of a technologyinfused strategic plan. Specific suggestions for implementation including professional
development in Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi) for teachers, hiring a full-time
technology coach, and further exploring the schools use of google apps and BYOT policy to
take advantage of the technology resources students already bring to school each day.
Subsequently, a full-time instructional coach has been hired for the high school. Although this
position is not exclusively for technology, it is a step in the correct direction to assist the school
in the integration and implementation of the technology plan. I will aid the instructional coach in
leading a team in the development of the shared vision and be the facilitator of communicating
the strategic plan to those outside the school.
Finally, the SWOT analysis includes the provision that new technology resources be a funding
priority for the county and funding sources be actively sought, if needed. The technology plan
should be accompanied with an action plan including specific timelines and benchmarks that can
be useful in reevaluating the technology plan each year according to how the school is
progressing. This document shows a plan for the facilitation of the evaluation of the
technology strategic plan. When funding is an obstacle, there are steps in place to seek and find
alternative methods for financial support for technology integration.

In completing this artifact, I learned how to evaluate the essential conditions for successful
technology integration. I also was able to find opportunities for improvement within the school
building itself, as well as identify threats that should be monitored and addressed in order for
future implementation to be successful. The SWOT analysis is a powerful, strategic method for
examining all the aspects of the school and unveiling the hidden strengths and weaknesses within
the daily operations.
If I were to complete the SWOT analysis again, I would administer the survey to a larger number
of individuals and conduct more interviews to gather more data. The addition of a focus group of
students, teachers and parents would also provide a rich plethora of data which would add to the
information already obtained.
The SWOT analysis should have a direct influence on school improvement and be applicable to
student achievement goals. The SWOT analysis should lead to an action plan that, when
followed, should be the cornerstone of a technology-infused school improvement plan. All
initiatives at a school should ultimately be connected to improved student achievement, and the
SWOT analysis identifies the technology gaps that should be addressed in the school
improvement plan.
