Self-Assessment Training

Directors Desk

(Cohort 2): October 14, 2015

NWMSU

The month of August seems to have come and gone in a whirlwind! It has been great to be in our districts
seeing many old and new faces, and we are all excited to get established in a routine soon!
This year we have added a Social Worker intern, Brittnie Morgan. You will likely see her in many of your
districts working with your staff and students. We are excited about the youthful enthusiasm she brings, as
well as, a variety of experiences that help her in working with your students this year.
As a reminder, ACES will continue to complete the following Compliance requirements for Districts:
Public Notice-radio version, please post the Public Notice on your school districts website
I would also like to remind you that you will want to be sure to know which Cohort group your district is in
this year. I have included the first training date for Cohort 2 in this newsletter.

Finance Updates

New Early Childhood (ECSE)FER

Office Manager
Heather Griffith

In September, the Special Education Finance section will be rolling out a new reporting system for Early
Childhood Special Education (ECSE) expenditures within ePeGS. The new reporting system will be
more efficient and less time consuming to complete. However, there are significant changes from the way
data is reported in the current system, including some of the items listed below:

griffith@maryville.k12.mo.us

Educational Diagnostician
Jodie Kurtz
kurtjod@maryville.k12.mo.us

Social Workers
Lisa Christmas
lisachristmas@maryville.k12.mo.us

Debbie Griffith-Fujinami
dfujinami@maryville.k12.mo.us
660.254.6133

Donna Hurt

-Payments will be based on the expenditures reported in the Annual Secretary of the Board Report
(ASBR) under function codes 1280 and 2559.
-Districts will no longer enter staff FTE and/or caseloads; this data will be pulled from MOSIS.
-Contracted ECSE providers must be entered into MOSIS with a program code of 19 in order for these
positions to pull onto the ECSE Expenditure Report.
-Contracted therapy providers will be held to caseload standards starting July 1, 2016 (this will not
impact reimbursement for the 2014-15 expenditures).
-Leases will be self-reported by the district in the FER and do not have to be submitted to the
Department.
-The End of the Year count will be utilized from the MOSIS June reporting cycle. This is a cumulative
count of all kids served in the ECSE program throughout the year.

Mental Health Tidbits

Coping Skills
Coping skills are tools that people use to help improve their emotional state, and can be tailored to each individual.
The key is figuring out a unique list of coping skills that work for each person. Ideally, when one begins to feel
stressed, sad, agitated, or angry, coping skills can be implemented to help regulate their emotions in order to avoid a
loss of control. Developing a coping skills list should be done when you are calm and your thoughts are clear. Not all
coping skills will work in all settings, therefore identifying coping skills for each setting would be best (home, school,
etc.). The following is a list of ideas, but do not limit yourself. It is best for the individual that will be using the coping
skills to be a part of making the list in order for it to be effective and for them to be invested.
*Take long steady deep breaths * Get a drink of water * Splash water on your face * Push on a wall * Take a short walk or do other physical
exercise * Think about a favorite place that feels positive and safe * Tense & relax muscles * Say positive things to yourself * Talk to someone
who makes you feel safe * Laugh * Tell a joke * Write in a journal * Tear /rip up paper * Draw * Ride a bike * Take a nap * Play with play
dough * Blow bubbles * Color * Play with your favorite toy * Listen to music * Call a friend * Sing a song * Play a game * Read * Play
favorite sport * Eat a snack * Play with pets * Go to a park * Dance *
