Library News-Mrs.Wanamaker
Karma.Wanamaker@indianola.k12.ia.us

Mrs. Sathoff has joined the library staff as the new associate. Please
welcome her to the building. 6th grade students are working hard on their
40 book challenge for language arts class. Mrs. Wanamaker is happy to
help students locate books and to suggest books to help them complete
this challenge.

Second Step
Next week, 6th graders will continue with the Second Step curriculum by participating in lessons
5 and 6. Lesson 5 focuses on understanding passive, aggressive and assertive ways to
communicate. Students will practice using assertiveness skills in class. Assertive communication
has been shown to decrease aggression, and has been shown to be an effective way to stand up
for oneself. In lesson 6, students will learn how to recognize bullying, empathize with students
who have been bullied, and will understand what to do if they or someone they know are being
bullied. One of the goals of this lesson is to help students recognize the full range of bullying
behaviors so that they can label specific behaviors as wrong, empowering them to stand up for
oneself and others. To learn more about these lessons, join www.secondstep.org with the
activation key SSP6 FAMI LY12 to watch videos about the Second Step program and get
additional information about what your student is learning.

I am pleased with the results of our World Map Assessment. Most

students did a wonderful job!!!! Check with your student or look on
Infinite Campus for their results. There are some students who will
need to retake their test, so watch for them to bring home a yellow
Request to Retake paper for you to sign This next week we will be
working with latitude and longitude coordinates to help us locate places around the
world. We will have our first DOG Test on Tuesday, Sept 22(ODD) and Wednesday,
Sept.23 (EVEN) Students do not need to study for this test as this is an assessment
of their ability to locate information in their atlases, rather than memorization of
facts.

Have an awesome weekend!

Science Mrs.Simpson
Dorisa.Simpson@indianola.k12.ia.us

This week in Science, students have taken the Science Focus Vocabulary Pretest and scored it.
Students have also worked on furthering their knowledge of different careers in Science as well
as what each area does and tools they use. In addition, students used their career research and
sentence starters provided by the teacher to aid in conducting substantive conversations
regarding their opinion of what area of science (that was researched) would be the most difficult
to live without. Students were expected to make a claim, support it with evidence, and defend
their thinking. Next week we will be starting our LTPs (Learning Target Packets) which help
students focus on the standard being taught and reflect on their learning.

Art Class website: www.artinspiredbylife.com

This week 6th graders took a survey on the art class website that had to do with
their art interests and what teamwork skills they are best at. The results will be
used to place students into groups with a variety of backgrounds and skill levels.
Students also worked on completing their Square 1 Art designs. These are due on
Friday Sept 16th. All extra square 1 art papers can be turned in next week by
Tuesday. Target Goals for this project are below:
1. I am able to recognize and describe the elements of art I used in my
artwork
2. I can apply contrast so my artwork stands out from a distance
3. I can create a unique and original artwork that reflects the interests
of the person it was designed for
4. I can refine my work to create good craftsmanship (neatness in the
coloring and edges, making correct media choices)
Upcoming week: We will reflect on our Square 1 art designs by critiquing each
others work using the 4 steps of art criticism. Next we will begin the Still Life
drawing unit, which they will learn all the tricks in drawing objects realistically.
Extracurricular projects in the Art Room (during students guided study periods):
Dot Day: Some students in each school participated in making dots for Sept 15 th
International Dot Day. These are displayed at the following businesses around town:

Indianola Public Library, Funaros Deli, Pageturners Bookstore, Studio Fusco, Heartland AEA
and JRene Clothing. Jane at the Indianola Public Library had the vision for this project
because of the book The Dot written by Peter Reynolds. Thank you to students who
helped to decorate the town with their creativity!
Zombies: Students are creating life-sized zombies to be used as targets at an October
Saturday Night Live at the YMCA

Murals: Students signed up to help design and paint murals on canvas that will
hang around the school later this year.
Birthday Banners: Students created Birthday Banners for faculty and students
with Birthdays in Sept/Oct. to hang up in the school.
