Activity- Scientific Revolution Timeline

academic
The scientific method was born out of the efforts of many people over many
hundreds of years. It came to be through the Scientific Revolution, which
marks a shift from knowing based on observation and reasoning to knowing
based on experimentation and evidence. During the revolution, a mind-shift
from viewing the solar system as geocentric earth-centered to heliocentric
sun-centered occurred.
ObjectiveCreate a timeline to show the major participants in the scientific revolution
and their contributions.
Procedure:
1. Rewrite the data table, matching the participant with their major
contribution.
Participant
Contribution to the Scientific Revolution
Nicolas Copernicus
Showed that the planets moved in ellipses.
(1473-1543)
Developed Laws of Planetary Motion.
Galileo Galilei
(1564- 1642)

Introduced the Heliocentric Theory

Johannes Kepler
(1571-1630)

Developed the laws of motion and explained

that gravity held planets in orbit.

Sir Isaac Newton

(1643-1727)

Discovered the phases of Venus and moons of

Jupiter, which supported the Heliocentric
Theory.

2. Create timeline.
a. Turn your paper to landscape orientation.
b. Use a ruler to draw a line horizontally through the center of the
paper.
c. Use the scale 1cm= 10 years. Start with the year 1470 and mark
the dates on the timeline through the year 1730. (You may use tick
marks to mark each 10 years and label the year every 50 years. )
d. Make a bracket for each participant showing the years they were
alive. Label the bracket with their name and annotate with their
contribution written IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
**Timeline must be neat.
Follow-up Questions

1. What theory did the Heliocentric Theory replace? How were they
different?
2. What technique did Galileo introduce? How did it help him disprove
Aristotles hypothesis about falling objects?
