CURRICULUM MAP

The curriculum map that I

used for this assignment was
developed by my instructor and is
completely textbook free. All the
assignments within the curriculum
map were created by my instructor
and helps to invoke discussion
within the class. This curriculum
map shows the lessons that will be
taught throughout the first
semester of the class and focuses
upon Algebra for ninth grade
students at Corona Del Sol High
School. The school is within the
Tempe Union High School
District and has had high
performance on test scores over
the past few years. The classroom size is large with class sizes of 29 students, 29 students, and 31
students. This classroom deals with a lot of health related topics throughout the semester
currently including an inquiry based lesson on healthy eating.
Sleep Mini Lesson Measuring Linear Relationship Correlation

CURRICULUM MAP

The lesson on linear relationship correlations would focus upon relating two different
quantities. These quantities must be related as in the quantities have a one to one relationship. I
would then relate the amount of hours that a student gets of sleep to various health aspects in
their life including overall health, academic performance, emotional wellbeing, social wellness
and other varieties of wellness. I would than question the students upon how they can achieve
more sleep, and what factors help make getting more sleep easier.
After this portion I would have the students discuss why they have trouble getting the
recommended amount of sleep during the week nights and what factors may help the students get
more sleep during the school nights to help them remain aware during class throughout the week.
This would allow the students to think of various ways in which they can improve their sleep
through the week. I would give more examples of the amount of sleep needed for various ages as
well and how that sleep that is needed changes as one ages. This would also bring the topic
towards talking about the brains hormones and how the body changes with a lack of sleep.
To ensure that the students can see the relationship between the two quantities, academic
performance and hours of sleep per night I would create various graphs depending on age to
show a direct relationship between the two. This would give the students something to build
upon through a visual in which they can relate their amount of sleep to their academic
performance. This would also be a good time to talk about outliers within mathematics as well.
To assess the students on this subject I would give the students a hand out that would let
them track the number of hours of sleep they got per night for the next week. This would be
graded on completion and not how many hours of sleep they are able to get, but I would
challenge the students to try and get the right amount of sleep needed for high academic
performance for a week to see how they feel after a week of trying this method. If they have a

positive reaction to the amount of sleep they get than they can continue to try and get the correct
amount of sleep per night for the rest of the year.
Graphing of Linear Functions
For my health mini lesson I would focus upon linear functions. Particularly I
would focus on graphing linear functions. Each linear function practiced would have health
related issues. The main focus of the mini lesson would be upon sugar consumption in America.
The goal of the mini lesson would focus on how sugar can affect the body and how sugar is
unhealthy. This would be focused upon graphing a linear relationship of the amount of sugar
consumed to the amount of calories gained.
Using a graphical model and having the students work on making a linear function
between the amount of sugar consumed and the amount of calories would allow students to see
how many calories they get by drinking a soda, Gatorade or even fruit juice. However since these
are still young students I would continue by having the students make a graph of the relation of
calorie intake to weight gain. This way the students would start to understand the concept of a
compositional function as well as allow them to see that the amount of sugar they consume will
directly affect their weight.
Using this as an opportunity to delve into a mini lesson within a health based lesson
would allow me to talk to the students about the negative affect of an abundant sugar diet and
how it can negatively affect health and academic success. To assess the students on the
information that they learned through this mini lesson I would have the students record the
amount of sugar that they consumed by beverages over the next week on a piece of paper, after
they create the amount of sugar they consumed from the week they would make a graph for each

day they consumed sugar to calculate their extra calories through a linear graph, I would then
have them translate their calories to weight gain. I would also have them do this for the week in
total as well, and convert their habit to their year for them to see how much weight they gain
through beverages per year.
Fitting a Line to Data Practice
The lesson on fitting a Line to Data Practice would give various examples of how to
make a line of best fit for a series of points. During this lesson many practices of taking an
amount of data and put a line of best fit to represent this data. This will allow the students to be
able to interpret trends in data and how to interpret data onto a graphically medium. By doing so
the students will be able to determine trends that are happening in the world and use that data
efficiently to determine what will occur in the future.
To show various trends in the environmental movement would allow students to see how
positive changes towards making the environment better can help their future health. Taking data
from o-zone levels over various years and predict the trends in the coming years if consumption
continues at the same rate. After that we can find another line of best fit for estimated years to
come as population increases how the use of fossil fuels will affect the ozone in the future.
Another topic that can be covered during this topic is the worlds population and how that
will affect the environment in the future as well as the food around the world. Using lines of best
fit we can estimate how large the future population will increase depending on the amount of
kids that individuals choose to have over the next few decades. Using these various models will
allow a mini lesson on environmental issues around the world be able to be addressed as well as
teach about line of best fit to the class.

CURRICULUM MAP

To assess this mini lesson students would be given a sheet of data and they would create a
graph will all the points on it, they would then draw a line of best fit, and with their knowledge
of the situation and using their reasoning skills determine the line of best fit for the current time
and then create another line of best fit for the future. Doing this will show that they understand
the content as well as give them the opportunity to use their reasoning skills to determine future
trends.
