Mechanical Basis of tooth movement
1. Pathologic tooth movement- Drifting or
movement of teeth due to the pathological changes in a
reas adjacent to the movingteeth.
2. Physiologic tooth movement- Naturally occurring
tooth movements that take place during and after tooth
eruption
3. Pressure Tension Theory- When force is applied on
the tooth, PDL is compressed on one side and stretched
on the other side
4. Bone modeling- is a mechanically mediated adaptive
process for changing a bone's size, shape, or position
5. Bone remodeling- is the process by which bone is
renewed to maintain bone strength and mineral
homeostasis
6. Bone deflection and piezoelectricity - can lead to
increases in the toughness of bone and resulting from
pressure on the bone in biological response.
7. hyalinization - conversion into a substance resembling
glass.
8. Force- strength or power exerted upon an object
9. Center of resistance-considering the tooth in its
alveolus.
10.
Moment- force that produce a turning effect on
the body on which it acts.
11.
Couple types of tooth movement- produce
when two equal opposite forces acts on a body.
12.
Tipping - The tendency of a tooth to turn or
rotate.
13.
Torsion-The effect of changing the inclination of
the tooth ; twisting

14.
Rotation- turning of a tooth by movement around
its long axis.
15.
Extrusion- displacement of a tooth along its long
axis out of the alveolus.
16.
Intrusion- displacemet of a tooth along its long
axis into the alveolus
