Preventing UV Rays

Evano, Michiko, SJ, Aryo, Alfred

Sun-Earth-Moon
System
Sun, Earth, and moon is an

object that is located in our solar

system

Earth revolution takes 365 days

around the sun, and earth rotate
in its orbit for 24 hours

Moon revolution on earth and

rotation in its orbit for 27 days

Sun does not revolution but

rotate in its orbit for 27 days

Sun-Earth-Moon
System

Many phenomenas are caused by the sun,

earth, and moon. Tides are caused by the
moons gravity, solar and lunar eclipses are
caused by all of the three, but ultraviolet rays
(which is caused by the sun and earth) is a
growing problem that needs to be put under
control.

UV Rays
Ideal Condition

The ozone layer should be

whole, and only 2% of
ultraviolet rays should
penetrate the layer
(naturally)
Skin cancer and cataract
patient numbers should
decrease, and only positive
effects should come from
UV rays

Current Condition

There are breaks in the

ozone layer, and the
number of skin cancer and
cataract patient numbers
are increasing.

More than 2% of UV rays

are penetrating the ozone
layer, and people in
Australia have to use antiUV cream and hats to go
out of their houses

How can we prevent ultraviolet rays

from harming our health?
Project focus question

Project Purposes

To prevent UV Rays from the sun to harming

people in the Earth

Project Benefit

Human will be avoided from harm because of

UV Rays from the Sun

Less skin cancer and cataract patients

Theories

Description

UV Rays comes from the sun. It is split into 3

types of UV Rays (UVA, UVB and UVC). UVA
can cause premature aging with large doses.
UVB can help build the Vitamin D in our body,
but can also causes skin cancer, while UVC
can damage our genes.

Ultraviolet Rays may break through the earth

if the ozone layer is broken or damaged.

Ozone Layer

Ozone layer is a molecule that contains 3 oxygen

substance (O3)

Made because reaction between sunlight with the

oxygen in the stratosphere

Located 60 km above earth surface with width of

20-25 km (the width is different from place to place)

Causes Of Breaks in The

Ozone Layer

Breaks in the ozone layer are caused by Freon

gas (used in sprays, fridges and ACs), Halon
gas (used to extinguish fire), pollution, etc.

Positive and Negative

Effects
Positive Effects
Negative Effects

Increases vitamin D

Skin cancer

Weakens plastic

Eye damage

Increases animals visions

Damaged crops and goods

Amphibian species are

reducing

PROBLEM:Cause and
Effect

Ultraviolet rays has entered the earths

atmosphere because of holes in the ozone
layer caused by human activities.

This is a problem for humans because this

means more ultraviolet rays will enter the
earth, causing negative effects to human
body (skin cancer, eye damage, weakened
immune systems, etc.)

PROBLEM:Data

The ultraviolet breaks through the ozone layer

because of holes caused by human activities.

Because of this, humans will have weakened

immune systems, a higher risk of skin cancer
and cataract, ruined crops, and many more
problems.

Effort

There has been effort to fix the ozone layer:

CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) was banned as

freon in 1987 because the chlorine
substance in it is breaking the ozone layer

A worldwide meeting was held in Montreal

to discuss of this problem.

However, the decision to ban the use of

Freon Gas has not been done fully.

How CFC broke the ozone

layer?

CFC have chlorine substance in it, when

sunlight hit the CFC, chlorine will be released
as a reaction and the chlorine damage the
ozone in the ozone layer

Our Solution

Our solution is to plant trees anywhere

possible and reduce the pollution to fix the
ozone layer. Because the ozone layer is made
out of oxygen, planting trees would help
(since it exchanges carbon dioxide for
oxygen).

Our Solution

Because it will take more than 50 years (and

an additional 10-20 because of global
warming) to fix the ozone layer, we need to
put on anti-uv cream, hats, or sunglasses
when going out and avoiding direct contact
with sunlight in the meantime to avoid health
issues.

Evaluation

Our solution can return the ozone layer back

to its original state and also protects people
from health problems.

Answering our Focus

Question

How can we prevent ultraviolet rays from

harming our health?

We can protect ourself by using clothing

that close our skin from UV Rays and
avoiding direct contact with sunlight. This
means that we would have to wear anti-UV
cream, hats, or sunglasses when going
outside. We also can fix the ozone layer to
protect ourself by planting trees.

Relation to the Big

Question
What are the causes and effects of structure
changes?

In our problem, the structure that is changing

is the earth atmosphere structure. The ozone
layer is the structure that change (since
breaks are appearing).

The cause of this change is because of human

activities, like the use of Freon Gas.

Because of this, more UV Rays seep into the

earths atmosphere and harm human body
and our health.
