    CHAPTER 1 INTRODUTION 1.1Introduction:- Automatic meter reading (AMR) is the technology of automatically collectingdata fromenergy meteringdevices (water, gas, and electric) and transferring that data toa central database for billing and/or analyzing. This saves employee trips, and meansthat billing can be based on actual consumption rather than on an estimate based on previous consumption, giving customers better control of their use of electric energy,gas usage, or water consumption.This means that billing can be based on actual consumption rather than on anestimate based on previous consumption, giving customers better control of their use of electric energy. The Transmitter is connected to the meter and it counts the pulses fromit and displays it over the seven segment display. It transmits the data over radiofrequency. At the receiver end the data is received by an receiver module and themicrocontroller will display it over the seven segment display. 1.2Brief History: -The primary driver for the automation of meter reading is not so much to reducelabor costs, but to obtain data that is otherwise unattainable. Many meters, especiallywater meters, are located in areas that require an appointment with the homeowner.     With the development of countrys economy and the improvement of national power, the power
    requirement is still ever increasing due to use of improper power management systems and the
    conventional energy metering system. Over the past years, metering devices have gone through
    much improvement, and are expected to become even more sophisticated, offering more and
    more services. Theft detection in old energy meter was also a challenge. The wide proliferation
    of wireless communication propose and explore new possibilities for the next generation
    Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) whose goal is to help collect the meter measurement
    automatically and possibly send commands to the meters The implementation of AMRS
    provides with many vital features as compared with the analog utility meter reading with man
    power. Some of these features are higher speed, improved load profile, automatic billing invoice,
    real time energy cost, load management, alarm warning, remote power switches on/off, tamper
    detection, bundling with water and gas.
