Introduction
Purpose of Manual
This manual was developed to provide Computer Aided Design (CAD) standards and
guidelines for the implementation of standards for Surveying and Engineering Design firms.
Provided in this document are two sets of standards. A standard that can be adopted and
modified for a generic user-defined standard or a standard that can be adopted which uses
the National Cad Standards. This is meant to be a foundation for your company standards
and does not address every possible situation your firm may encounter.
This document can be used and modified for use as a company cad standards manual.

Scope
This manual covers drawing templates, project prototypes, pen tables and associated files
required to set up your company Cad Standards when implementing Autodesk Land
Development Desktop.
The Standards prefixed with a CO (Company) follow a generic convention typically used in
the Surveying and Engineering Industries. These standards can be modified and adopted
into your companys practices and procedures.
The standards prefixed with NCS (National Cad Standards) generally follow those outlined in
National Cad Standards, dated January, 1996, and are modified where required to meet
surveying and engineering requirements when using Autodesk Land Desktop, Autodesk Civil
Design, and Autodesk Survey.

Drawing Setup and Structure

In order for project team members to easily share work on a project, it is important that the
method of drafting and the structure of the drawing set be standardized.

Use of Model Space and Paper Space

All drafting shall be done at 1:1 (1 AutoCAD unit = 1 foot or 1 Meter), in decimal units, in
the AutoCAD model space environment. Plotting shall be done using the plot layout tools of
AutoCADs paper space (layout tabs) environment; drawing sheets shall be set up at a scale
of 1:1, and views in the drawing shall be scaled using viewport scaling. In addition to the
drawing border, other entities to be placed in paper space include general notes and sheetspecific legends.
An exception to this rule exists when Land Development Desktops Sheet Manager tools for
profile and cross-section sheets are implemented.

Plan Sheet and Drawing Border Size

The standard plan sheet shall be determined by the project.

Drawing Scales
The drawing scales are determined by the project manager or the client.
The scale should be determined prior the start of the project.
LTSCALE is governed by the Drawing Setup Profile selected when creating a drawing using
Land Desktop by selecting the drawing scale. If the Drawing is a 50 scale drawing then 50 is
the linetype scale. The properties of individual lines will have an LTSCALE of 1.
When working in Model space the LTSCALE should equal the drawing scale (this is set
automatically by Land Desktop). The PSLTSCALE will be set to 0. This assumes the Viewport
to be plotted will also be 20 scale. If the view ports are different scales then after
completion of design in Model space, most likely in the CD (construction document) drawing
when you are ready to plot you may change the LTSCALE to 1 and the PSLTSCALEe to 1 and
forcing the linetype scale to be scaled according to the viewport scale.

XREFs
For small projects with five or less plan sheets, it is acceptable to xref the design drawings
into a single Construction Document drawing and utilize the layout tabs to create each
plotted sheet.
For larger projects, where drawing size impacts computer performance, the design drawing
should be xrefd into separate Construction Document drawing created for each discipline.
For example, the Site Layout Plan, Utility Plan, Grading and Drainage Plan, Landscape Plan,
etc. would all be separate construction document drawings with the design drawings xrefd
into each of them.
This is the recommended procedure even for the smaller drawings. Once a Construction
Document drawing is set up, the only reason to use it is to plot the sheets. Additional
benefits include: smaller file size, additional users can designing while the drafter is setting
up the sheets, etc
Xrefs should also be used wherever a part of the basemap or other information will be used
in more than one drawing, so that any changes are automatically updated in all of the
associated drawings.

Construction Document Naming Convention

The Construction Document Naming convention should be determined at the start of the
project. Since most companies have different requirements and may work for many clients,
it will be left up to the individual companies to determine a naming convention for a set of
construction documents.
A few recommended naming conventions are shown below:
PH1_LAY_3-4.dwg - would be an appropriate file name for Phase 1, Layout Plan, sheets
3-4. Where sheets 3 and 4 would be layout tabs in the Construction document.
UTL-5-6 would be an appropriate name for Utility Plan, sheets 5-6. Where sheets 5 and 6
would be layout tabs in the Construction document
NTSDTL-9 would be an appropriate name for Notes and Details, sheet 9.
Whatever naming convention is determined make sure it is consistent throughout your
department.
Although this document does not discuss the Sheet Set Manager available in AutoCAD 2005
based products and later its use can be beneficial when setting up Construction Documents.

Drawing Standard Files

The Drawing Standard files (dws) are used in AutoCAD to verify the layers existing in the
drawing adhere to the desired standards. These files are:

Sample Company Layers.dws

Sample NCS Layers.dws

Drawing Layer States

The Drawing Layer States files (las) are used by AutoCAD to set the characteristics oflayers
that exist in the drawing (ON/OFF, FREEZE/THAW, colors, linetypes, etc.). After using the
dwt file mentioned above when creating a new drawing, you can restore the default layer
state to ensure the layers have the proper characteristics. There are two layer state files
provided:

Sample Company Layers.las

Sample NCS Layers.las

Layer Naming Conventions

Company Layer Standards
The Company Layer Standards use a three field convention.

Field one identifies the discipline

Field two identifies the feature

Field three identifies the description or attribute

Example: CT-ROAD-CTR would be:

CT = Civil/Transportation
ROAD = Road,street
CTR = Centerline
Refer to Sample Company Layers.xls for a detailed list of layer names and discipline names.
National Cad Standards
This layer naming convention will closely follow the National Cad Standards (AIA) layering
convention. This will allow for a more uniform and extensive layer list.

Page 10

A complete list of Layer Names can be acquired by contacting

There are five defined layer name data fields:
Discipline Designator
Major Group
Minor Groups I
Minor Group II
Status
The Discipline and Major Groups are mandatory. The Minor Group and Status fields are
optional. Each data field is separated from adjacent fields by a dash (-) for clarity.
The document will use a combination of Level 1 and Level II Discipline Designators for Layer
Names:

Any Layers needed that are not in the standards should be documented. If you need to
create a layer, use a 4 character Abbreviation (look in the Abbreviations of the National Cad
Standards for possible choices).

Colors
Colors and linetypes of entities shall generally be defined bylayer. Colors for each layer
are determined from the Plot Style Table. Refer to the pen table files (CTB) for colors
assigned in these standards.

Page 12

Contour Styles
Contour Styles are used to easily display contours created in Land Desktop, and ensure
adherence to a company standard. These styles may be adjusted or additional styles addes
as needed.

Format Manager

The format manger contains formats for importing and exporting point data into
Land Desktop. The formats found here are standard text file formats provided by
Autodesk:

Figure 1

Label Styles
Labels are used in conjunction with Point Objects, Lines, Curves and Spirals. Each set of
standards has some typical label styles that can be utilized and modified as needed.
The path to the folder containing the label styles is: \data\labels

Project Prototype Structure

The user should start projects in one of the following ways:

Page 13

1. As you create a new drawing, use the Create Project button

2. Through Projects > Project Manager you can use the Create New Project button.
Do not use Windows explorer to create project folders. If a project is created this way the
project settings and standards will not be followed.
When creating a new project, the Project Information field should contain a Project Number
to easily identify the project.
The Project Description field should contain the Projects Address and location. Best case it
will contain a Street Address, City, State, Zip, POC (Point of Contact), and POC Phone
number. At a minimum the Street or nearest road intersection, and county or city and state
should be used.
The Keyword to be used when creating the project could be any string of words that helps
identify the project. An example might be the Project Name, using Underscores for the
separation of the Name. You can also use several keywords, separated by commas, such as
client name, project street name, county, etc. (See Figure 2)

Figure 2
As a project is created the project subdirectories will automatically be created as a result of
selecting the appropriate Land Desktop Project Prototype. The following Table describes the
Subdirectory structure created using the project prototypes:

All files should reside in their appropriate folder. Subdirectories within the folders shown in
Table 6 can be created by the user as needed. The Sub folders however should be named so
they can be easily identified. If using a date in the folder a recommended format should be
YYMMDD. (Year Month Day)
Design Drawings where the project designs (models) are created and modified. The
design drawing files for each project shall be stored in the root of the
"dwg" subdirectory under the Project folder.
Construction Documents the complied Design Drawings made into plan sheets for plan
review and construction. These files shall be stored in the CD
(Construction Documents) subfolder of the dwg folder.

Page 15

Once the Construction Documents are created and setup for the project their main purpose
is for plotting only. All design and design modifications are to be accomplished within the
design drawings or models.

Drawing Setup Profiles

The drawing setup profiles control drawing units, coordinate zones, orientation, text style,
and border. Profiles can be created for geographical location, including standard scales and
settings. You can then save the specific profile to be used when creating new drawings.

Text Styles
Text styles are loaded using the drawing setup profile.
Using different font styles in a drawing accomplishes two goals: it is more aesthetically
appealing and easier to read. Autodesk products have Text Styles that consists of a
Character Set and Size.
Character set simplex is the base set used for the Text styles in both standards supplied.
Text Styles can have any name. This Standard follows the Leroy Naming system. L100 is
the Style name for a plotted text height of 0.10 inches. A height or 0.10 Inches is an
industry standard and typically required by plan reviewers. (Plotted Height * Drawing Scale
= Text height in AutoCAD Units). Table 7 displays the Leroy Text Styles and their plotted
height.
Leroy Text styles are only to be used in model space.
Text styles that have a user defined height are for Paper Space.

All Non Leroy Text Styles are user defined.

When using Land Desktop all Leroy Sizes are sized according to the Drawing Scale.
Example: L100 with a drawing scale of 100 the text height in LDT is 10.

Page 17

Description Keys
The description files are used to set the point objects on a designated layer along with
placing symbols into the drawing on designated layers. The survey crews will be required to
use the DesKey in their data collectors to identify the information collected in the field.
Proper coding will be the key to a field to finish mapping process.

Survey Figure Settings

The survey figure file controls the layer figures are created on when importing a survey field
book or manually creating figures. The name of the figure is identified from the same
description keys used by the survey crew.
Land Desktop can only use one figure file, set in the user preferences. One of the following
paths will need to be set prior to importing a survey field book or using the figure
commands to automatically place the figure on the correct layer.

Symbol Manager
The symbol manager directory stores the symbols used by Land Desktop when importing
points, survey field books and organizes typically used symbols for easy access.
Standard symbols are supplied each set and discipline. The symbols can be replaced by
symbols that may be required by your locality.

CTB Files (Pen Weights)

Plotted pen weights and corresponding AutoCAD colors for full-scale drawings are listed in
Table 10. Drafting Pen numbers are included for reference. Plotting widths for half-scale
drawings shall be one-half that shown in the table.

_Company-half.ctb
_Company-full.ctb
_NCS-half.ctb
_NCS-full.ctb

The pen tables above use a 9 pen weight rotation. Pen number one (1), also known as color
red, is the thinnest pen. Pen number nine (9), also known as a color grey, is the thickest
pen. This pattern repeats for 11-19, 21-29, 31-39 until pen 199.
Pens (colors) 10, 20, 30 any color that ends in a zero are all a weight of 0.0075, which is
an in-between pen 1 and 2 in weight
Pens 111-199 are the shaded pens. They follow the same pen weight rotation. However pen
111-119 are shaded 10% making pen 111 the thinnest and lightest pen available. Pens
121-129 are 20% and so on
Pens 200-249 are reserved for special cases.
Pens 250, 251, 252, 253, 254, 255 are all the same weight (.010) and are shaded 50%,
60%, 70%, 80% and 90% respectively.
