RED BLOOD CELL

Another name for red blood cell is erythrocyte.

'Erythro' means red and 'cyte' means cell.

Where are they located?

-Red blood cells are located in
blood vessels.
-They are made inside our bones, in
the bone marrow.
-Red blood cells use blood vessels
to travel and transport oxygen and
other nutrients.

Shape
-The red blood cell is shaped like a
donut without the hole.
-This shape is called a bi-concave.

Function

Their main job is to collect oxygen from the alveoli in your lungs and deliver it all around your body.
They also collect waste products from different parts of your body and take them back to your lungs
where you breathe them out.

How does the function of this cell help keep the organism alive?

The RBCs contain Haemoglobin which

is necessary for energy and oxygenation
that is very important for maintaining life.

How does the shape of the cell affect the function?

-For RBCs to have the biconcave
shape make them flexible as they fit
through tiny capillaries where they
release their oxygen load.
-The shape of it increases the amount
of surface area, causing it a large
surface area to volume ratio.
-This large surface area means that
oxygen can spread quickly in or even
out of the cell.

Relationship between RBCs and organs

-The lungs in gas exchange.
-Heart for the pumping action
-Kidneys in getting rid of urea and
other wastes
-Bone marrow in creation red blood
cells

Diseases by the malfunction.

Sickle cell anemia:
-A genetic condition
-Sickle cell anemia, the red blood cell
are sticky and stiff.
-They can block your blood flow.
-Families of this disease came from
africa, south or central america and
mediterranean countries including
turkey and italy.

Diseases by the malfunction.

Malaria:
-A mosquitos bite transmits a parasite
into a persons blood, where it infects
red blood cell.
-The red blood cell rupture, causing
fever, chills and organ damage.

Special about RBCs

-RBCs are specialize in bags of
hemoglobin. They pick up oxygen from
our lungs and release it to the tissues of
our body.
-RBCs have the unique biconcave
disc shape, and the cytoplasm of the
RBCs contains haemoglobin.
-They have no nucleus.
-Theyre only located in animal cell.

Reticulocyte
-Its a young red blood cell
that usually remain in the
bone marrow and only few of
them risking out into the
circulating blood.
-It has reticular (mesh-like)
shape.

Reticulocyte
-Reticulocytes are different from other
cells because they release a signal
that is neither strong (like lymphocytes)
nor weak (like red blood cells)
-It contains ER, GOLGI BODY, and
MITOCHONDRIA inside cytoplasm.
* there are no nucleus on the step of
reticulocytes*

Reticulocyte to Erythrocyte

They start out with a nucleus, like other cells, but when they fill up with
hemoglobin the nucleus is squished smaller and smaller until it disappears by
coming out.
