6-Create developmentally appropriate language, literature, and literacy activities

Learning for children begins at birth and continues through their life time. I learned
how to create developmentally appropriate language, literature, and literacy
activities. I learned language, reading, and writing progresses through play and
activity plans. Children learn through play. When you supply the needed material in
play they will role play. By supplying writing utensils and paper, children will role
play and start to develop the skills they need to read and write. Children learn
language and literacy through play. As children progress they learn through
repetition and memory. When selecting books to read to children, they will be antibias and will have a diverse culture. Your book area should be free of stereotypes
and be inspected to be appropriate for the level of reading you are teaching. We as
teachers need to select books that have anti-bias pictures and text, quality of
writing, quality of illustrations and appropriate for the age group. I learned how to
check books for cultural sensitivity from the article Selecting anti-bias books.
Children learn to read and write through interactions with family and teachers. From
the article learning to read and write, I learned childrens imaginations are
encouraged by storytelling. Children learn to read by watching how they are read to.
The same is true with writing. When children first learned to write it may look like
scribbles. I learned from Rhonda Kellog there are 20 different scribbles in art. I
learned let them do this. Inventive spelling contributes to the beginning of reading
and writing. When you start to teach children the alphabet expose them to a few
letters at a time. I learned this way they can comprehend and master the letters,
then move on to more. A good way to get children to recognize words is to label
everything. I learned the single most important activity to help children understand
and build the essential skills to comprehend reading and writing is to read aloud to
them. High-quality reading occurs when children feel emotionally secure. A good
way to develop childrens language, literature, and literacy is through activities. I
learned by reading high-quality books that are anti-bias and culturally sensitive
children feel more secure and learn more. Transposing childrens spoken words to
written symbols provides a concrete demonstrations of strings of letters between
spaces that are words. I learned when you teach kindergarteners word study and
decoding skills, along with stories that they can practice these skill, they do better
in school. As with all teaching curriculum, the lesson plans must fit the
developmental level of the child. This is only achieved through documentations and
observations. I learned all children learn at their own pace and their own levels. As
teachers we need to make sure our activity plans are developmentally appropriate.
All activity plans must incorporate the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards.
When activity plans are geared towards reading books to children as well as
individuals, you can observe if a child is learning what you are teaching. I learned
they are many ways to teach children appropriate language, literature, and literacy
activities. I learned you could read to them, storytelling, finger plays, flannel board
stories, puppets and labeling everyday objects. When you create learning materials
to support language and literature, childrens cognitive, physical, social, and
emotional skills improve. They retain information better when they feel safe and
secure in their environments. Children stat to learn writing by scribbling and

eventually print script. Always encourage a child at every level of learning to read
and write. I learned from the checklist racism & sexism how to identify high
quality books that should be in your reading center.
