Arsenic in CA Wines

The U.S. has not set a permissible limit for arsenic in wine although many countries
have restrictions on the level of arsenic in imported wines. In Europe, the permissible
level is less than 200 ppb while in Canada, the permissible level is lower at 100 ppb.

Here is a complete list of wines named in a CA lawsuit over high levels of arsenic in
wines (http://goo.gl/3HnBUC) . Note that the USEPA safe drinking water limit is only 10
ppb.
German researchers have theorized that some native beers have higher arsenic levels
than those present in water tested before brewing when diatomaceous earth is used as
a clarifier. http://www.beveragedaily.com/Regulation-Safety/Scientist-explains-higherarsenic-levels-in-German-beers. Note that diatomaceous earth is used as a clarifier for
wines as well as beers. Is this the source for the high levels of arsenic in wines also?
We have investigated Arsenic in wine using Hydride Generation/ Gas
chromatography/Photoionization Detection (HG/GC.PID) and also found high levels of
arsenic III in some CA wines. .An example is shown in this blog.
