Rhonda Elton - FRIT 7231 Key Assessment

Part I: Identification of Learning Problem

General Audience:
My target audience is K 8th grade teachers at Georgetown K-8 School. The
teachers are of various ages and are at various stages in their career. Their
technical abilities, skills and knowledge also vary greatly.
Problem Identification:
A teacher website for use as a communication tool between teachers and
parents is a very important instrument in education. Teacher websites allow parents
access to a variety of data, events, assignments and information. Using a teacher
website to keep parents informed by posting calendars, schedules, sharing photos,
and using class blogs can serve as a powerful asset to keep parents up to date,
informed and involved in their childs education. A great teacher website is always a
positive instrument in connecting with parents. On the other hand, teachers who do
not use a teacher website, or those who create a website but do not use it
effectively, run the risk of creating a negative rapport with parents. Many teachers
at Georgetown School do not use a teacher website as a communication and
information tool for parents. The teachers will learn the steps to create a teacher
website using Weebly. The websites will include the following pages:
*Introduction/About the Teacher Page
*Contact Page/ Link to Email
*Class Schedule Page
*Important Announcements/Dates to Remember Page
*Useful Links Page
Iinstructional Goals:
The goal of my instruction is to teach and guide Georgetown teachers in
creating a teacher website using Weebly so that they can use the website as a tool
to keep parents informed, involved, and engaged in their childs education.

II. Learner Analysis

1. Introduction
The intended group of learners for this project 5 th through 8th grade teachers
at Georgetown K-8 School. Georgetown K-8 School is part of the Savannah-Chatham
County Public School System. There are a total of thirteen 5 th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

teachers. Of these 13 teachers, 8 are female and 5 are male. Racially, the group
consists of 9 white teachers and 4 African American teachers. There are 2 first year
teachers, 1 teacher who has taught between 2 and 5 years, and the other 10 have
taught over 5 years. This information was retrieved by observation, interviews and
surveys.

2. Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge

All of the teachers have at least one computer and they are all comfortable
using the computer. They all understand the basic functions of a computer. They all
also know what an internet site is and most of them understand how to navigate
internet sites. Most of the teachers have viewed other teacher websites and have
some idea of what a teacher website looks like and the function that it serves. They
all have email access, and are comfortable checking, writing and responding to
emails. However, very few of them feel that they are comfortable and ready to host
their own site.
3. Attitudes Toward Content and Academic Motivation
All of the teachers understand the importance of keeping parents informed,
engaged, and involved in their childs education. All of them also understand how
creating their own web site could be used as a means of communication. All of the
teachers can operate a Windows computer. Many are unsure of the difficulty of
creating a website. All of the teachers question how much time it will take to keep
the website current and up to date. With all of their other duties and responsibilities,
as well as their job to plan meaningful lessons, they are all worried about the aspect
of time in creating this website. However, all of the teachers stated that they would
be willing to embark on this endeavor.

4. Educational Ability Levels

These 13 teachers all have bachelors degrees. Five of them have masters
degrees. One has a doctorate.
5. General Learning Preferences
Several of the teachers are hands-on learners and want to learn this process
together by sitting in our computer lab and going through it step by step. Others
feel like their time is too valuable, and they would like to have a set of written
directions that they can follow.
6. Attitude Toward Teachers and School
The teachers are very pro-education. They love teaching and they each enjoy
teaching their specific content area. They support our school, and they see the need
to connect with parents in a positive and helpful way. They see the value in creating

this website, but they get overwhelmed at the thought of having one more thing
to do.
7. Group Characteristics
There is not a lot of time for socialization as a teacher. These teachers
gravitate to and seem to stay with their grade levels. That is where they feel the
most comfortable. This allows them to communicate about their own students,
parents, curriculum, issues, grades, behavior problems, conferences, etc. There is
not very much vertical team interaction.
Part III: Task Analysis
I conducted a procedural analysis in order to walk through the whole process
so that I could publish a website of my own and make sure that the steps would
align with the objectives of the module I was creating. By completing the steps
myself, I found many details that I would have assumed that the students would
have known how to do without any previous instruction. It was important to me to
walk through the steps to see the whole process from start to finish from a
beginners point of view. I developed a procedural outline that details each step from registering for the website to the final product. By physically completing each
step of the process, I hope to have prevented any assumptions on my part as an
instructor.

Subject Matter Expert (SME)
My name is Rhonda Elton and I will serve as the SME for this instructional
plan. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Armstrong State College in
Savannah, Georgia. I also have my Masters degree in Early Childhood Education.
Currently, I am pursuing a Masters of Education Instructional Technology/School
Library Media Concentration degree from Georgia Southern University. I currently
work as a media specialist in a K-8 school in the Savannah-Chatham County Public
School District.
My previous work experience as a classroom teacher for the past 20 years
and my current position as a media specialist provide me with the qualifications
needed to assume the role of the SME for this project. As a classroom teacher, I
used Weebly to construct a classroom website in order to communicate with my
parents. Currently, I assist teachers with creating their own websites. Additionally, I
manage the website for our school.

Part VI : Content Sequencing and Instructional Strategies

Instructional Sequence
Sequenc
e

Description

Objectiv
e

Learners will originate and specify their own web repository

using weebly.com.

Learners will discuss and create the six page architecture for
their website.

Learners will discuss and upload documents to corresponding

pages of the website.

Learners will publish the completed website for students and

parents to use via the Internet.

This sequence builds on concepts in a world related order. The learner will proceed
through the instruction of each lesson just as the teacher would proceed through
planning the lesson. The steps the learner takes to complete the lesson are the
steps that are taken when experts create web repositories in the real world. The
learner will follow a set of steps given in a sequence of events.
Lesson 1: What is Weebly?
Objective 1: To create own web site using Weebly.
Objective 1A: To log on to the Weebly website.
Objective 1B: To complete the registration process for the web repository.
Objective 1C: To choose a theme as a background.
Objective 1D: To establish a specified name-based domain.
Initial Presentation: Learners will discuss various teacher created websites that they
have heard of, seen, or used. Sample topics might include pros and cons of each
site, ease of use, and site content.
Generative Strategy: Learners will email the teacher their intended password and
domain name. Then they will complete the registration process. If any changes are
necessary, they will be emailed to the teacher.
Differentiation: The product here is differentiated as learners have the ability to
make choices related to theme, background colors, headers, and layout of their
website. They also have choices related to the name of their website.
Lesson 2: Web Design: Creating Six Pages
Objective 2A: To create and save a Home page with personal
characteristics.
Objective 2B: To create and save an About the Teacher page.
Objective 2C: To create and save a Contact page which includes contact
information.
Objective 2D: To create and save a Class Schedule page where a current
schedule is posted.
Objective 2E: To create and save a Dates to Remember page where
important dates are posted.
Objective 2F: To create and save a Useful Links page where links are posted
and updated as needed.
Initial Presentation: Learners will view various websites that the instructor has
linked in the lesson. The task is to determine the positive and negative aspects of
each site. Learners will determine what they see as the pros and cons of design
content. Each learner will create a graphic organizer or chart displaying their

thoughts. The class will discuss the differences between each page and what
information should be included on each page.
Generative Strategy: Create and save six pages on their website.
Differentiation: Learners have a choice on what type of graphic organizer they
would like to turn in showing the pros and cons of the various websites that they
evaluated.

Lesson 3: Uploading and Editing

Objective 3A: To upload files to Class Schedule page.
Objective 3B: To upload files to Dates to Remember page.
Objective 3C: To upload files to Useful Links page.
Initial Presentation: Learners will watch a linked video and read emailed directions
on how to upload saved files from a computer to a webpage.
Generative Strategy: Learners will find the where they saved the needed files on
their computers to upload to the specific pages. They will upload the files to their
respective pages.
Differentiation: Learners have a choice of what they would like to upload to each of
their pages in order to make their website more personal.

Lesson 4: Publishing the Final Product

Objective 4A: To review and revise each page.
Objective 4B: To publish completed work.
Initial Presentation: Students will reflect on the process of creating the website.
Using the Web 2.0 tool, Padlet, each student will add one comment describing any
plans or ideas for additions or enhancements they have for going forward with their
website in the future. Learners will also develop an advertisement or notice
informing parents of their new website.
Generative Strategy: Students will publish their final product and submit the URL of
their completed, published website to the teacher via email.

Section VIII : Formative Evaluation Plan

The formative learner evaluation will be collected through the use of a survey
at the end of the course. The survey will give learners the chance to evaluate the
course objectives, materials, content, usefulness, and the instructor.Angela
LaPlante, the instructional technology coach for my school will serve as my SME.
Since she has developed online courses for teachers in our district, I feel she will be
able to give me constructive feedback concerning my course. She will review the
course content and the materials. Then we will meet so that I can get feedback and
make any needed corrections. She will also have access to the completed modules
online in order to review them before I start the courses. Once approved, the
courses will be ready to begin.
