On our way to the geothermal fields we stopped
at the lake Kleifarvatn, 8 km2 in size and 97 m deep.

Wind and water eroded tuff palagonit from volcanic

eruptions under the ice.

The students stayed in a small hut owned by the UST
in Seltn. The teachers had to be content with staying
in tents.
lfar preparing the lamb lobe and then slow grilling in
a hole in the ground.
A small but cosy place.

The area is a geothermal field with hot mud pools and
solfatarians. The water emerges to the surface at just
about boiling temperature and the earth crust is thin.

Dissolved minerals have painted the place in different

colours.

Our work was to fill sand into the path and to margin
the foot path with rocks.
On Saturday and Sunday the weather stayed mostly
dry and the work made good progress.

On Monday it rained more or less and we had to do
the most difficult part digging around the boardwalk.
After a few minutes everyone was wet and dirty.

We worked half the day and used the rest of the time
to look around, e.g. the cliffs at Krsuvkurbjarg.

Excursion to Westman Islands

After the volunteer work we went back to Reykjavk
and had a bath in the geothermal openair swimming
pool.
The next day we went by ferry from Landeyjahfn to
the Westman Islands, where 1973-74 a volcano
eruption nearly destroyed the fishing village on the
island Heimaey.

We stayed one night on the island and after another

night in Reykjavk we had to return home to Germany.

Good bye!
