PATCHWORK ESSAY BRIEF
!

There are 3 components of coursework that are involved in the Architecture in Context module. These
are:
Coursework 1 The Patchwork Essay, which is worth 50% of the marks available in this module
Coursework 2 E-test, which is worth 25% of the mark available in this module
Coursework 3 Precedents Blog, which is worth 25% of the marks available in this module

A Patchwork Essay is basically an Essay compiled of shorter Essays that are collected and combined in
order to complete the nal piece of work. The quesSon for the Essay is The relaSonship between the
object and the intervening spacers is not formal: it is always rooted in the context of a parScular se[ng.
Dalibor Vesely (in Brooker and Stone, 2007, p.57). Using the Harvard Referencing System, correct
grammar, spelling and punctuaSon, all three patchworks must be wricen using language appropriate to
a formal academic essay. If the Harvard Referencing System is not used, it could result in an Academic
Misconduct hearing.

Below is the structure of the patchworks:


Patchwork 1 (500 words) IntroducSon, general notes on the history of and the wider context of the
building, and the conclusion.
Patchwork 2 (500 words) IntroducSon, general notes on style and the buildings main features
Patchwork 3 (1500 words) The last patchwork should contain Patchworks 1 and 2 in order as a
coherent piece of wriSng in this order:
- IntroducSon (for the whole nal essay not just from patchwork 1 or 2)
- Patchwork 1 (edited aTer feedback has been given)
- Patchwork 2 (edited aTer feedback has been given)
- Analyse and Evaluate informaSon gathered for both Patchworks 1 and 2, and answer the
following quesSon: What does it tell you about how the dierent contexts have inuenced the
building over Sme and how the way they are perceived has changed over Sme, and also include
reecSve comments about the quesSon above if you agree with it or not and why?
- Conclusion (for the whole nal essay not just from patchwork 1 or 2)

The aims of this Patchwork assessment is to enhance current knowledge and understanding of the
context and design elements of architecture, researching and academic wriSng skills, and to develop
criScal and reecSve thinking through analysis of the built environment.

The Learning outcomes are as follows:


- IdenSfy and evaluate, through discussion and formal criSque, the social, historical and cultural
contexts of architecture, ciSes and landscapes.
- Analyse and debate the architectural percepSons and manifestaSons of a range of cultures and
socieSes.
- Recognise the relaSonship between historic and contemporary architectural contexts.
- Evaluate informaSon and use it to plan and develop invesSgaSon strategies and responses.
- Use visual, verbal and wricen communicaSon methods to eecSvely engage in and convey
contextual knowledge and understanding.
- Use a referencing system related to academic wriSng in order to avoid plagiarism.

The patchworks will be assessed using the criteria and percentages shown below:

Feedback will be received for every submission so that alteraSons can be made. Failure to submiced and
of the listed pieces of work will result in all work being capped at a low 3rd.

E-TEST BRIEF
!

This is an individual online test that take place on 06/06/16 that uses mulSple choice quesSons to assess
knowledge of architecture in context based on:
- The content of the lectures that will cover dierent architectural debates, theories and Sme
periods
- Image idenScaSon Being able to recognise buildings that have been shown in lectures and
knowing their name, locaSon, era etc.
The e-test will last 40 minutes and will be in a controlled environment.
Personal notes from the lectures can be brought in to the test but they have to be wricen on the
PowerPoint slides, however no other notaSons or book swill be permiced. Learning Outcomes:

PRECEDENTS BLOG BRIEF
!

Over the course of the year a set of tasks need to be uploaded to a precedents blog. These tasks all will
relate to issues discussed during the lectures and seminars, as well as the design studio module.
ConsideraSon is needed for wider areas of society, poliScs and culture that have taken place in dierent
historical contexts and also to develop criScal thinking skills about architectural ideas. As the tasks are
being completed you should be able to recognise the relaSonship between historic and contemporary
architectural contexts.
Complete the tasks on a regular basis (One task a week preferably) and should follow the schedule when
doing so. Use pictures, drawings and other sources of informaSon that are appropriate.

Include a brief conclusion aTer every piece of feedback as well.

A PDF of each page as a full screenshot using Fireshot Lite
