Dear Friends in Christ,

Moses prays today Would that all the people of
the LORD were prophets! Pope Francis reminds
us that we are all prophets by virtue of our
bap sm. Moses spoke of biblical Israel, Francis
speaks of the New IsraelCatholics and all
Chris ans united in our Faith in the Lord Jesus.
During the past few weeks we have been reading
from James. James reminds us that not only is it
essen al to hear Gods Word but then do Gods Word. It is evident that here
at St. Peter Claver many are not only hearers of the Word but doers as well.

School Principal

Last Sunday, close to four hundred parishioners brought food and warmth to
the Mother Katherine Center to welcome the friars. Fr. Frank, Br. Paul and I
were humbled by such a warm welcome and introduc on to the parish. We

were very well fed as well. We are very grateful. Last Wednesday, 140
Sr. Grace Calvisi, DC
students and teachers from Mount De Sales Academy came to St. Peter
Coordinator of Religious Educa on (CRE)
Claver to begin their day of service in our neighborhood. Fr. Frank welcomed
Be ye Middlebrooks
them as they began their day with Mass. These students, several of whom

Our Prodigal God

We keep having to relearn how
prodigal God is. It is as if God cannot quite
manage to say no. We think it is surely fine
when God is prodigal with usrich in
mercy and forgiveness, generous in grace.
But what about the otherthe enemy, the
sinner, the here c, the outsider? Well, we
expect God to be as s ngy with that
person as we are.
Moses and Joshua wanted such a cozy world, too. They wondered
how the spirit of God could be given to the two who did not show up at the
mee ng tenttodays church. And the apostles in the Gospel complained
because there were some miracle workers who were clearly not followers of
Jesus. Gods great free wheeling generosity confounded them all. Let this
be, says Jesus. Just see to it that you who lead con nue to be worthy of your
calling.

The readings and their message
Numbers 11:25-29
The spirit of prophesy given to Moses has also been given to others.
Moses is the fountain of prophesy and the first
prophet; yet when it is conceded upon others, Joshua
becomes upset. The place of the revela on was in the tent of gathering situated just outside the campsite. Two people are named,
but others who were also outside the campsite
received the spirit. Joshua was cri cal that the spirit of
prophesy had been given to others, possibly because his own authority could be threatened. This narra on expresses the tension
between the leaderships authority and those who exercised the
ministry in an extra ocial manner. Moses is not bothered nor
does he try to prevent that the two men, who received the spirit of
prophesy outside the camp in the tent of gathering, from exercising their ministry.
James 5:1-6
The descrip on of the dicul es of the rich does not include the
cau on to change their ways to make up their fortune. This reading is a wise teaching describing the consequences of a certain
lifestyle that does not adjust to the way of truth and jus ce. In the
Mediterranean world, all the wealth had already been distributed.
If someone suddenly acquired more, it was suspected it had been
done by taking advantage or abusing others and in unethical ways.
They could have appropriated the salaries of those who were most
vulnerable. Such a prac ce is terrible for Israel and a reminder of
the mes of slavery in Egypt. The parallel between the Israelites in
Egypt and the workers in this passage is clear; both groups work
for inhuman masters.; both groups cry out to God and He heard
them.
Mark 9:38-43. 45. 47-48
The reading of the gospel echoes the irst reading from the Old Testament. It challenges those who were not a part of the group of
disciples that were close to Jesus, but Jesus himself advises them
to let them preach. For whoever is not against us is for us.

Homily reflec on
Some mes we judge other people based on appearance
or because of personal stories we know. Perhaps we spurn the capacity of others to direct or the talents they have that can be put at
the service of the Church.
Other mes, some groups perceive that they have the
privilege and all the right within a community to direct and lead.
Although they are not outright denied into the group, they may
make it dicult or almost impossible for newcomers to the
community or younger people to have access. Today, Jesus warns
against all this. No one, except God, has the right to decide who
has moral authority and who does not.
Perhaps we behave in the same manner in our homes.
Whether it is because we know people too well, and with such familiarity their true talents escape us, or because we are stuck doing
the things we do that we do not recognize the good and talent of
those around us. If someone takes the ini a ve and does something well, a cri c o en emerges, like Joshua or John in the gospel
reading. It is sad, but what these reac ons o en
indicate is a feeling of envy and a sense of being threatened. In the
insecurity of our iden ty and certain resentments, we think others
can do things well or even be er than us.
Today we are called toward a more joyous and peaceful
a tude, which can also provide greater peace and trust: a call to
recognize the good in others; to celebrate it; to thank God for so
many blessings and talents; to serve others without
compensa on; and to support all eorts in our surroundings that
produce good, kindness, and beauty.

For reflec on
Have I ever felt threatened because someone close to me knows
how to do something beer than I do? Have I ever witnessed
conflict and tension in my parish or community? What is the
reason behind it? In my home, am I able to recognize talent, kindness, service, and generosity among my family members? Do I
appreciate and support them?

Blessing of Animals

Franciscans worldwide bless animals for the Feast of

domes c pets you would bring on Saturday, October
3rd. We will meet from noon un l 12:30 pm in the grassy area of

TRADICIONES DE
NUESTRA FE

As mismo, Dios
Seamos
Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM

Nmeros. 11:25-29
An guo Testamento.

Nadie, sino Dios, ene derecho a decidir quin ene
autoridad moral y quin no.
