Introductory Information

Lesson topic: Consolidation of map essentials (including


assessment)
Lesson objectives:
1. Students will know what the following terms mean: compass
directions, legends, scale, title, locational/grid references

2. Students will be able to draw simple maps for peers with all
the essential aspects of maps included
3. Students will use and interpret a familiar map

Assessment:
Map interpretation
- Students will interpret and answer questions based on a familiar
map.
- Students will use their prior knowledge of BOLTS to correct
missing features on the map
Materials:
SMARTboard
Assessment sheet

Lesson Outline:
Introduce (5mins)
Revise BOLTS. Revise the idea of scale - have an example on the SMARTboard. Talk about directions - ask how would I tell someone how
to get to (use example on SMARTboard)
Explore & Assessment (30mins)
Activity One: (10mins)
Finish off Learning Commons maps with directions for friends. Make it clear that they need to have all the essentials of a map PLUS
directions for their friends (show my example on SMARTboard)
Activity Two: (20mins)
School map assessment (see Appendix 1)

EXAMPLE: If I wanted to get from the top of the playground at

Go north for about 5 meters until you reach the P.E shed, then
turn west and travel about 25 meters until you reach the Wittber
Building. Next, turn north and travel about 3 meters and you
have arrived at room 4B
Tip: use the each square equals 5 meters scale to determine
the distance that needs to be traveled
Give directions from the swings at E, 8 to the bin enclosure at
H, 8 and I, 8.
