Units and Timeline

(Timeline are approximate...but its like science 10 lots to learn, not enough
class time,- dont dawdle!)

Overall Mark
Weighting

Chemistry 11 is designed to
give students an understanding
of many of the concepts of
chemistry. It is designed to be
an overview course and we will
touch on many topics that help
students understand the structure of atoms and how this
structure affects matter.

Unit VIChemical Reactions - 3 weeks (review of Sc.10)

The book is divided into 10

units and we will cover the
majority of each section. This
book is highly readable and
contains practice problems
with full solutions in the back.
Use this book well and you will
do wellin the course.

Unit II Introduction to Chemistry

(SI Units, Metric Conversions, Sig Figs) Units I & II2 weeks)
Unit IIIPhysical Properties and Physical Changes - 3 weeks
Unit VIIIAtoms and the Periodic Table2 weeks
Unit IV Inorganic Nomenclature - 2 weeks (review of Sc.10)
Unit VThe Mole Concept (Really Important Topic) - 4 weeks
Unit VIIStoichiometry (Really Important Topic) - 4 weeks
Unit IXSolution Chemistry - 2 weeks

Evaluation

Unit XOrganic Chemistry - 2 weeks

There will be opportunity for students to practice their understanding of concepts and to
self evaluate.

These timelimes are for learning and practice of material. Expect 1

additional period for a test for each unit, and quizzes in between.
Re-writes on Unit Tests: will only be permitted on Atomic Theory,
The Mole, and Stoichiometry (this works out to one re-write in each
term). Re-writes will be scheduled outside of class time and have one
sitting only.

So You Want to Do Well?

Here are some important tips:
Students are expected to strive for
excellence.

Be in class and be on time-This will

be a difficult course to learn if you
are away.
Complete all work This is NOT a
course you can learn by reading and
studying the text. You MUST DO
the practice problems.

Do all questions I assign and then

do additional questions.
Hand in all your work on time If
an assignment has been returned,
marked you have lost the opportunity for those marks.

Form a study group.

Attend test prep sessions
Practice, Practice, Practice!
As per WCB policy no food or drink
is allowed in the science lab.

Maintain a minimum standard of MP3s or electronic listening devicneatness and completeness There es are not permitted in class. CELL
is a minimum standard for acPHONES OFF!
ceptable work.
Use a Proper Calculator, your cell
phone will not cut it here!
