Lesson Plan

Unit/Topic: Mathematics
Date:
Length: 45 minutes
Year Level: Year 9 (low level)
Key Learning Area:
Lesson Intention: I will be able to calculate Mean, Mode, Median and Range.
Success Criteria:
I can rearrange data in order from the lowest to the highest.
I can find the median of the entire set.
I can find the mode of the entire set.
I can find the mean of the whole data.
I can find the range of the entire set.
Outcomes:
ACMSP207: Investigate the effect of individual data values , including outliers, on
the mean and median
LESSON OUTCOMES:
This is the lesson of reviewing what students have learnt in year 8 before going to present data in
some kinds of plot. This lesson is to reinforce low-level students and consolidate high-level ones.
Students have already known how to collect data from different sources and evaluate it.
Year 8s lesson outcomes:

ACMSP284: Investigate techniques for collecting data, including census, sampling and
observation
ACMSP206: Explore the practicalities and implications of obtaining data through sampling
using a variety of investigative processes

This class is the second level class. Generally, they can work well both in group and individually.
Also, they can stick on doing tasks. However, some of them easily get distracted and need to
remind concentration a lot. There are six students that need a teacher standing beside and forcing
them to focus on tasks. For this lesson median, mode, mean and range, I am going to let them do
in pairs. One slow student works in pair with one fast student so that the fast one can support for
the slow one. Besides giving prepared notes for them to note down the definition, I will pause at
each definition and explain more.

Main Content:
Teachers activities
- Lead to the lesson today
Mean, Mode, Median and
Range (MMMR)
- Explain that this is the old
knowledge from year 8 but we
have to review it for some
students who forget it
- Hand out the prepared notes
with the definitions and ways to
find MMMR
- Ask them to watch the video
from youtube prepared on
power point.
- Ask them to fill out the
missing words in the notes as
they are listening to the clip
- Replay the clip. Let them fill in
the blank with the missing
words. Pause at each
explanation of the definitions
and explain more.
- Show the missing words for
students who cannot be done.
- Ask them to stick the handout
on their notebooks
- Give a set of data on power
point and ask them to find
MMMR
- Give answers and explain

3.
4.
5.
6.

Keep quiet in class

Raise your hand if you want to ask or answer
Sit in your comfortable chair
Stay focused
Use NO cell phones or tablets unless necessary
When you hear 3 claps, stop talking or you will have to answer one of my questions and I will
take credit for that.

If they dont follow teachers expectations, they will be given minuses in their record. To encourage
answer, teacher will give pluses marked in their record.
This is the second level class. Some of them easily get distracted. Teacher should being strict and
straightforward and prepare attractive notes and presentation to catch and remain their attention.
Teacher keeps walking around while students are doing their task to check the attention and
understanding. Also, teacher should encourage students contribution verbally and nonverbally.
Teacher should be aware of the pair-work productivity when arranging slow students with fast
students to avoid negative behaviour.
