Background and purpose. Malaria is a major public health problem in the world
include of Indonesia. An annual incidence of 15 million clinical cases and causing
an estimated 42000 deaths per year. But it is also becoming more difficult to treat
malaria due to the increasing drug resistance. Therefore, the need for alternative
drugs. This study aims at investigating the effect extract of black seed (Nigella
sativa), curcumin (Curcuma longa) and the the combination of black seed and
curcumin towards parasitemia level in mice that infected of Plasmodium berghei.
Subject and method. A malaria parasite, Plasmodium berghei, was inoculated into
mice intraperitoneally. The antimalarial activity was evaluated daily for 4 days.
Three groups of mice (6 mice in each group) were administered extract black seed
(Nigella sativa) 3L/KgBB, curcumin (Curcuma longa) 100mg/kgBB and
combination of black seed 3L/KgBB and curcumin 100 mg/kgBB in each group
respectively. The positive control group was treated with 25mg/kgBW/day and the
negative control groups received aquadest. In every twenty four hours after the
administration of the last dose, thin blood films were made from the tail of each
mouse. Smears stained with Giemsa stain. The percentage of parasitaemia was
determined by counting the number of parasitized erythrocytes out of 1000 red
blood cells in random fields under light microscope. And then countinued by
counting percentage of parasitaemia suppression.
Result and conslusion. The antimalarial effect presented in group P1 given extract
black seed and group P3 given combination of black seed and curcumin, as for
group P2 given extract curcumin not show the effect antimalarial. The highest
percentage of parasitaemia presented in group P1 suppression 77,92% was shown in
the faou days after giving extract.
