TABLE OF CONTENTS
The Statement of Work, also referred to as the SOW is a written confirmation of what a project
will produce and the terms and conditions under which the project team will perform the work
(Portny et al.,2008). The Statement of Work represents a project managers project
commitments. According to Portney, Mantel, Meredith, Shafer, Sutton, and Kramer, the
statement of work includes the following information: purpose, objective, constrains, and
assumptions (2008).
Statement of Work
Project Name: Our Nation and Society: Lets go Camping!
Project Tracking Number: CS1- Case Study 1, "Scott Allen: Designing Learning Objects for
Primary Learners"
Purpose: How and why the project came to be, the scope of the project, and the general
approach to be followed (Portny et al., 2008). As presented in Case Study 1, Scott Allen and
his design team won a bid for a major project with SchoolsOnline, a national initiative to develop
online resources for primary and secondary schools (Ertmer, Quinn, Glazewski, 2014). What
SchoolsOnline wanted? A fairly small-scale resources that are flexible enough for a teacher to
use with a whole class or for a student to work with independently. As the winners, we are
elated to begin the learning object, Lets Go Camping! Although the learning object will be
created for K-2 learners, it will also be adaptable for to those learners at the secondary level.
Lets Go Camping! will aid in students understanding of differentiating between the things that
they need and the things that they want. This project is the first of 15 learning objects and will
be followed through by various teams: writing team, design team, and development team who
will all have specific roles towards the successful completion of the project.
Overview of Deliverables:
Students will go on a virtual camping trip in which they will need to decide on the
necessities that they will need for the duration of the trip.
Given limitations such as a certain amount of space in their bags, students will have to
choose between their needs and wants in regards to lodging, bedding, food, devices, etc.
Students will be provided with feedback based on the choices that they made.
To make students feel like they can be successful, they will be able to complete the
camping experience more than once to see if they can make better choices.
Objectives: specific outcomes the project will produce (Portny et al., 2008).
1. Being placed in a real-life situation and with limited bag capacity, students will select
items that are best to take with them on a camping trip with 80% accuracy.
2. Given a selection of food choices, students will identify those that are healthy and
unhealthy towards survival with no error.
3. Students will distinguish between needs and wants by reviewing which is more
appropriate for a camping trip.
The writing team will create the story board and script of the learning object
The design team will work towards developing the Flash while keeping in mind the
design specifications.
The SME will provide the content for instruction. They will maintain a strong level of
communication with other members on the panel.
SchoolsOnline is responsible for giving teams enough time to complete revision before
the learning object goes live to students.
Constraints: restrictions that will limit whats achieved, how and when the project team can do
it and for what cost ((Portney et al., 2008). Each learner will see items differently, so it might
be a challenge to see which items are most important. What one person may find unimportant,
another person may find vital to survival.
Due to the fact that this is a large team, the time frame should not be lengthy (3-5 months).
Assumptions: statements about uncertain information the project manager is taking as fact
while conceiving, planning, and performing the project (Portney et al., 2008).
The project manager is creating the learning object around K-3 however SchoolsOnline
wants this to be used for primary and secondary schools.
The sponsor will be responsible for delivering the learning object to students.
Rationale Statement:
While working on Case Study 1- Designing Learning Object for Primary Learners, I found that a
vast amount of information was missing. Due to the fact that learning objects were not created, I
used those similar to the ones that were created for Mission to Mars. Furthermore, no details
were given for the time frame so I assumed 1 month would be enough to complete the project. I
am completely uncertain about the cost, so I did not make any reference to cost as yet in this
Statement of Work. Lastly, my objectives were based around primary students.

thought processes

Specific Project Objectives & Success Criteria:
Learning Objectives
Being placed in a real-life situation and with limited bag capacity, students will select items that
are best to take with them on a camping trip with 80% accuracy.
4. Given a selection of food choices, students will identify those that are healthy and
unhealthy towards survival with no error.
5. Students will distinguish between needs and wants by reviewing which is more
appropriate for a camping trip.
Project Objectives
1. Create a learning object that meets the learning goals and objectives
2. Build a learning object that can be modified for older learners
3. Ensure that the learning object can function on multiple devices
Cost
The estimated cost for this project is $12,500.00. This will be finalized by the project manager.
Due to the fact that this is a large team, the time frame should not be lengthy (3-5 months).
