The COPE is a 60-item multidimensional coping scale designed to asses 15 distict ways

people cope with stress. Although cope includes a number of responses that are expected
to be dysfunctional (e.g., behavioral disengagement and substance abuse) a majority of
the scales include to be functional (e.g., active coping, humor, acceptance, and positive
reinterpretation and growth)
COPE scales measure conceptually distinct aspects of positive-focused coping, aspects of
emotion-focused coping, and aspects of coping that arguably are less helpful.
Administered: COPE is a self-administered instrument that generally takes less than 15
minutes to complete.
Issues inherent to validity were considered throughout all aspects of instrument creation.
The scale went through several developmental generations, Items with weak loadings
were revised or discarded, new items written, and the scale readministered, until the
factor structure of each subscale was within an acceptable range (Carver, et.al., 1989)

The COPE inventory (Carver et al. 1989) consists of 60 items assessing the different
ways which people respond to stress. The inventory taps into a variety of coping
strategies through 15 scales, each represented by 4 items. The COPE has been used to
assess both dispositional as well as situational aspects of coping, and instructions for the
measures can be changed to reflect these different orientations.
