Abstract
This paper outlines the content of a professional development plan and a timeline for the ongoing
professional learning of an elementary teacher instructing focused on many content areas. This
plan outlines the ongoing process used to develop a professional teaching portfolio and the
artifacts selected to demonstrate teaching competency in the selected professional development
areas. It also provides reasoning of the construction of the plan and provides a plan for
presenting the information to other colleagues.

Professional Development Planning

In order to meet the demands of this 21st century learners, it is important that teachers
have continuous professional development training.
The purpose of a professional development plan is to identify important areas for
professional growth that will helps teachers to achieve the necessary professional learning that
increases student learning. Great induction programs create opportunities for novice teachers to
learn from best practices and analyze and reflect on their teaching. (Edutopia). A professional
development plan should be ongoing where it keeps teachers up-to-date on new research on how
children learn, and emerging technology tools for the classroom, learning about new curriculum
resources, and more improvement in teaching and learning.
My Professional Development Plan: Setting the Context
Up to this point in my career, my teaching experience has been limited to substituting for
all grades in elementary, middle school and high school; where my teaching responsibilities have
focused on covering instructional content over multiple subject areas. As well as an intervention
teacher for 4th grade students who were struggling in ELD. I am hoping to be able to complete
my credential and masters program this year and be able to apply to a fulltime teaching position
in elementary.
I also test students on CELDT in elementary. My current academic goals for students are
directly related to mathematics and the English language development for English Language
Learner (ELL) students as well as math and technology in the classroom. Since my focus is to
become an elementary teacher I understand that to be an effective teacher, I need to have
professional learning goals across multiple domains of student learning.

Running head: LOOKING FORWARD

Domain F states that teachers improve their teaching practices by soliciting feedback
and engaging in cycles of planning, teaching, reflecting, discerning problems, and applying new
strategies. Over the next five years, (see table 1) I would like to increase my effectiveness in
teaching content based English language development to help English learners learn and acquire
English to a level of proficiency (advanced) that maximizes their capacity to engage successfully
in academic studies taught in English. This training emphasizes in listening and speaking to build
reading and writing; explicitly teaching English vocabulary, syntax, grammar, functions, and
conventions; integrating meaning and communication; providing corrective feedback on form;
implementing communication and language-learning strategies; emphasizing academic language
acquisition; and basing instruction on specific language objectives. I have delve into a range of
professional development opportunities that will help me achieve this career goal. First, I would
like to be trained on Content Based ELD that supporting content teachers with language
Instruction (SS/SCI/MTH) this workshop will provide my with an opportunity to delve further
into the district-adopted ELD standards to enhance and increase instructional rigor. The
workshop will give me an opportunity to examine the ELD standards in conjunction with their
CCSS standards as well as how to plan and develop differentiated units of instruction for ELD.

My second professional development goal focuses on further developing my skills at

integrating the Common Core State Standards. This seminar offer all teachers exciting avenues
for deepening their practice and engaging students in meaningful demonstrations of knowledge. I
would like to be able to implement new techniques designed to help me meet Common Core
demands and reach the high expectations we have for all of our students.

My third professional development goal is to effectively differentiate mathematics

instruction to help struggling students. Being able to develop teaching skills related to best
instruction. This training offer ideas for blended learning strategies to help students understand
mathematical concepts, increase achievement, and enhance confidence. Learn how to incorporate
vocabulary, problem solving strategies, and manipulatives to help students develop reasoning
skills and proficiency. Students need to understand math deeply and use it effectively and for this
purpose I need to be prepared especially for those students identified with learning problems.
Another professional development goal is to attend a positive behavior intervention and
support training because students who struggle with behavioral issues are more likely to develop
conflicted relationships with teachers and other students; which then repels their attention from
learning. The majority of school in my district are Title 1 School and there is a high rate of
behavior issues and conflict between students. I would like that after taking this training, I would
approach students using more conflict resolution skills so in my future class and school problem
behaviors will decrease.
Finally, I would like to receive further professional development in the area of instruction
incorporating technology. Developing technology strategies in other areas of content is not only
smart professional practice, but engaging students in project based learning motivates students
to use this 21st century multimedia in authentic learning situations that are based on the content
standards. Students get excited as they find information to support their theories. Therefore, I am
very interested in learning more about webquest and project based learning.

Procedure for Sharing my Professional Development Proposal
One way I will share my professional development proposal is through collaboration
meetings done at grade level or whole school. This is a great opportunity to share my
professional development plan, illustrating what excellent of teaching signifies at a personal
level, providing teachers with the steps I took to obtain my goals and professional development.
Assisting other teachers in developing their goals and encourage them to embark on any
professional development opportunities. Teacher networks is another strategy I would use, this
networks tend to focus on specific subject-matter and seek to deepen teachers' understanding of
content and their facility with new teaching strategies. They provide teachers access to a
"professional community" in which their expertise and experience are respected and where they
can be active participants in professional dialogue about improving practice.
Artifacts Included for Reflection Domain F
As a teacher candidate and looking forward my teaching career, it is important to reflect
upon my past professional development experiences as well. I have not attended many
professional development conferences. But I believe I am off to a good start with the couple I

Running head: LOOKING FORWARD

have taken. The following analysis describes some of my learnings in professional development
sittings and the teaching artifacts I have collected to represent my development.
The first artifact I chose to include was from my Professional Development on Reporters
educators Training. Teacher are mandated by law to report known or suspected child abuse.
Teachers are in contact with many children on a daily basis and can be alert to changes in the
childs behavior or mood. Teachers make many reports of child abuse, but also fail to report at
times despite their role as mandated reporters. So it is important to be aware of mi rights and
obligations as a mandated reporter.
The second artifact I chose to illustrate my professional growth is an online training
session I attended for the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). This
training helped me build awareness of the EL assessment and it provided me with necessary
knowledge to properly administer the group portion of the assessment as well as the individual
parts of it. Scoring and analyzing data to determine areas of student growth and areas in need of
targeted instruction in development of the English language. The third artifact I chose for this
domain of professional growth is a review of an article Effective Teacher Professional
Development Crucial to the Common Core. It states how professional development is crucial to
meet the demands of the common core.
