Shared reading Ss and T read pages 71-74, where the
author has chosen to paint a very realistic picture of
Vivekananda Road. Text may be displayed on the IWB.
T and Ss identify/highlight adjectives and imagery in the
piece of text.
T What image comes to mind when you picture Valli?
What does she look/sound/smell/feel like?
Think, Pair, Share: discuss the images of Valli that Ss
picture in their minds. Ss may refer to Vall brainstorm.
Ss record word-images of Valli in their books.
Ss write one I am line about Valli that incorporates
imagery.
Symbolism
Small group shared reading: pages 95-100 Valli
atdoctors office.
Round Robin (Colorin Colorado, 2015) - Ss discuss words
or phrases that describe their thoughts/feelings in
response to the pages read, and add to Valli brainstorm.
T and Ss discuss how main concepts/ideas in the pages
read could be communicated through symbols. T
together with class develop 1 symbol that represents a
part the pages read as an example.
Ss develop 3 symbols that could represent Valli in some
way. Ss share with a friend, selected Ss present to the
class.
Ss write one I am line about Valli that incorporates a

Locations
T provides list of the places that Valli has been on her
journey (see Resource 3). Ss vew maps to locate some
of these.
Ss view photographs of rural and urban India which may
be representative of the places Valli has visited (see
Resource 4).
Small groups: Ss discuss how they felt in response to
the images. T - What did you notice about the places?
How was it similar or different to your life? Did anything
surprise or shock you? What did it make you think
about?
As a class, Ss think of adjectives to describe the places
Valli has been, and add to Valli brainstorm.
Ss write one I am line that describes, with some detail,
a place that Valli spent time in
Collate and Create
T displays criteria for I am poems, discusses with Ss
see Resource 1.
Ss create I am Valli poems by collating their I am
sentences from English Learning Journals written I am
lines, Indian culture research, dictionaires and
thesauruses to form a cohesive poem.
Ss create their I am Valli poems, into I am Valli
artworks (see Resource 5), using watercolour paints and
black fine-liners.

Ss select a line within chosen poem that interests them.
T selects 3-4 Ss to share with the class the line they
chose, and reason it interests them. Eg. interesting word
/vocabulary, similar/contrasting feelings, reminded them
of a particular part of the book or a particular image of
India.
Ss move around room again and repeat twice. T selects
different Ss to share.
T selects some Ss to share their entire poem to the
class.
Ss submit poems for marking.
