APPENDIX C

SUGGESTED METHODS
FOR OBTAINING THE OPERATING
TEMPERATURE OF VESSEL WALLS IN SERVICE
diately detected. Thermocouples shall be attached to
the outside surface of the vessel by inserting the
terminals separately in two small holes drilled into the
shell approximately 12 in. (13 mm) center-to-center and
firmly securing them therein, or by some other equally
satisfactory method.

C-1
At least three thermocouples shall be installed on
vessels that are to have contents at temperatures above
that at which the allowable stress value of the material
is less than its allowable stress value at 100F. One
of the thermocouples shall be on the head that will
be subject to the higher temperature, and the other two
shall be on the shell in the zone of maximum temperature. For a number of vessels in similar service in the
same plant, thermocouples need be attached to one
vessel only of each group or battery, provided that
each vessel has a suitable temperature measuring device
to show the temperature of the entering fluid, in order
that a comparison of the operation of the different
vessels can be made and any abnormal operation imme-

C-2
In lieu of the provisions in the preceding paragraph,
it shall be optional to provide a thermocouple or
other temperature measuring device for obtaining the
temperature of the fluid in the zone of the vessel
having the highest temperature. In this case, the metal
temperature shall be assumed to be the same as the
maximum fluid temperature.
