Description
Sixth Grade Math is a year-long course in which students will continue to expand their knowledge in the areas of Number Systems, Rational
Numbers, Equations and Expressions, Algebra, Statistics, Patterns, and Relationships. Students will have a variety of opportunities throughout the
year to use their creativity and imagination in conjunction with what they are learning in class.
Materials Needed (*More materials will be needed throughout the year for projects).
Grading Policy
The students will have formal tests, quizzes (announced and unannounced), warm-up activities, class work, and homework assignments. There will
also be other types of informal assessments to periodically check for understanding. Projects will be assigned throughout the year.
The breakdown for grading is as follows:
A= 90-100
Tests: 45%
B= 80-89
Daily Grades: 40%
C= 70-79
Homework: 15%
F= 0-69
Math Notebook/Interactive Notebook
All students will be required to keep a math notebook in class or Interactive Notebook (depending on which period you are in). We will use this
notebook every day. The students will have spot checks every so often, during which I will check their notebooks to determine if the students have
been keeping up with their notebooks.
Homework
Homework will be assigned Mon. - Thurs. night. All homework will be posted in the classroom and it is expected to be completed and turned in on the
due date. I will also post homework on the class Facebook page. You can add me via my school email address, which is aaikens@brooks.k12.ga.us.
It will be updated with all class and homework assignments.
Absences
Excessive absences should be avoided. In the event of an absence, the student is required to make up class and homework assignments. Any
student that is absent should make sure to collect all missing work from the Student Center board located in class. Any make up tests/quizzes will
need to be scheduled for either before school, after school, during Flp, or during lunch. Please see the Student Handbook for the system policy on
absences.
(Please note it is the students responsibility to collect any missed assignments once he/she returns after an absence, failure to do so can
result in a zero on the assignment)
Extra Help
If any student feels he/she needs extra help, has any questions, or needs to stay after school to make up work from an absence, he is encouraged to
see me and set up a time. I am occasionally available after school with advanced notice.

10. Ending class- I will dismiss class once we have concluded the lesson for the day. Please do
not pack up to leave until you receive the direction to do so. Please line up and leave in a calm
and orderly fashion.
11. Absences- If you have been absent, please get any missed work from the absence folder
located on the student center bulletin board. You may need to come in before or after school to
take any missed tests or quizzes. All work should be made up as soon as possible following your
absence. Long-term assignments are due the day you return to school, unless prior
arrangements have been made.
12. Respect for property- Please do not touch the personal items I have around the classroom
or on my desk. All school property (books,, teaching materials, furniture, computers, etc.) should
be handled carefully and with respect. You also should not touch or use another students
belongings unless you have been given permission to do so.
13. Group Work- At times you will be working in groups with other students. As a courtesy to
others, you should keep your voices at a quiet level. (I should not be able to hear individual
people.) You should cooperate with your group members and attempt to solve your own
problems. If I am already assisting another group and you need help, please move on to another
task until I am available. Group members are expected to treat each other with respect and to
listen to each others ideas and opinions. If you work hard both individually and collectively, your
group will be successful. All talking is expected to stop when directed by your teacher.
14. Behavior during announcements/interruptions- There should be no talking when
the intercom comes on or when the telephone rings. Please stop what you are doing and
listen to the announcement or instructions. If another adult comes into the classroom during
instructional time, please continue with the assignment or wait quietly.
15. Hallway behavior- Out of respect for other teachers and their classes, you will be expected
to be silent in the hallway as we travel through the school. Please walk on the right side of the
hallway. This rule applies even if you see other classes acting inappropriately.
16. Fire Drills/ Disaster Drills- If an alarm sounds, you must stop working immediately. We will
exit the room in a single-file line without talking. Listen for teacher directions and stay
together as a class throughout the drill (unless you are directed to do otherwise). You should
not talk at all during the course of the drill.
17. Substitute Teacher- You should be respectful at all times to any substitute in the building. I
expect you to be on your best behavior and offer your assistance, if requested.
thoroughly read the syllabus and Ms. Aikenss Classroom Rules and Procedures AND WILL BE ADHERING TO THE
