Understand and Demonstrate the Efficient Use of Energy in Terms of Conversion and
Use of Energy in Society
Outcomes as given by Alberta Program of Studies
Science 10
Describe, qualitatively and in terms of thermodynamic laws, the energy transformations occurring in
devices and systems to help evaluate energy efficiency
Define, operationally, useful energy from a technological perspective, and analyze the stages of useful
energy transformations in technological systems
Recognize the limits to the amount of useful energy (loss of energy in form of heat)
Explain, quantitatively, efficiency as a measure of the useful work compared to the total energy put
into an energy conversion process/device.
Mathematics 10C
Interpret and explain the relationships among data, graphs and situations.
Essential Questions:
that
Skills in describing and determining
relationships between information are
developed and required for understanding this
goal.
Smaller components of a system are analyzed
to determine the bigger problem (efficiency),
and their contributing factors.
Factors relating to sustainability, including
political, economic and environmental
Laws of thermodynamics
How energy is converted from input to output
Concepts of energy
Summative Assessment:
Quiz on thermodynamics
Worksheets
Written interpretation of data (graphs)
Conversion of data into a graph
Group work
Observations
Discussions surfacing
Check for reasoning, based on evidence rich
justifications
Learning Guideline
Proposed Activities:
Identify terms and concepts related to systems and energy via worksheets
Quiz and quiz corrections after teacher feedback
Analyze graphs, charts, etc. in context of energy inputs, outputs, and conversion
Identify ways the school could become more sustainable in groups and discuss
Class time given to research - case studies provided from Aboriginal communities.
After all 6 learning goals have been explore, students should wrap up their research and begin
presenting their final projects submissions to a board of Experts (teacher and experts that had come in
previously)
