Patterns & Relations (Grade 7)

Lesson #7
Input/Output Tables: Charades
Grade
Grade 7
Duration of Lesson
65 minutes
Textbook
None

Objective:
- For students to begin understanding that equations can be organized into
input/output tables
- Introduce students to equations with two variables (specifically x and y as we
begin to move towards plotting coordinates on the Cartesian plane)

Aim for Instructor:
- Scaffold knowledge of whole number equations of the form ax+b=c to new
understanding of double variable equations (ax+b=y)
- Solve double variable equations and record findings in input/output tables

Prior Knowledge Required:
- Knowledge of solving equations
- Preservation of equality
- Manipulation of single variable equations

Materials:
- SMART Board technology
- Individual white boards for each student

Time
Lesson

Introduce double variable equations of the form y=ax+b.

15 minutes Show students the relation of y to f(x) in the equation f(x)= ax+b.

As a class solve input/output tables from:

Function Charades:
Students will find a partner and choose a role of input or output. The
pair will agree on a double variable equation. The students will create a
skit that goes through at least 5 inputs and outputs. Students must record

on paper what they are representing for reference. Students will practice
a skit where the output will reflect the input. The student who chooses to
represent input will create a number with their body and yell out the
number. The partner who has chosen to be output must respond to the
input and create the corresponding output number with their body as a
reaction to the input.

When the skit is ready to be presented the group will gather and students
will observe the input and output and make conjectures about what they
believe the function is. Each group will present and each group will guess
the functions being physically represented. Function propositions will be
shown on individual white boards from groups.

5 minutes

Exit Slip:
Fill out an input/output table presented by the instructor and hand in
when leaving.

Meeting Needs of Diverse Learners:
Students Who Finish Early: Create more input/output actions for large numbers.
Students Who Appear To Be Struggling: Encourage simpler functions, possibly
one step equations instead of two step (for example: f(x)=2x).

Assessment:
Formative Assessment: Engagement in activity and level of accuracy in
representing a function
Summative Assessment: Exit slips

Conclusion:
This lesson is an engaging way to inform students of input and output functions.
