INTRODUCTION
Establishing prior knowledge. Tuning in activity. Focus
questioning

MAIN BODY
Guiding Inquiry and Practise
Assessment Criteria: Assessment AS Learning

Assessment criteria: Assessment FOR learning

Outline and structure of the lesson: warm up game,
discussion, drills and activities and modified game
First lesson of hockey
- Introduce the main skills:
- Reinforce safety considerations: raising the stick, swinging, no
hitting other students, dont deliberately hit the feet of others
- Passing, dribbling, shooting are combined
- Tackling next week, used with defending
- Hockey is an international field sport played all year round by
two teams of 11 players
- The object is to score more goals than your opponent by
playing the ball with the stick from inside the circle
- All hockey sticks are held right-handed, normally with the left
hand at the top of the stick and the right hand below this. The
head of a hockey stick has a rounded side (the right-hand or
back side) and a fl at side (the left-hand or front side).
Modified rules
- The field is divided into 3 zones defence, midfield and
forward with goals at each end protected by a no-go area
of 3 metres
- Each team has 6 players on the field, with 2 in each zone
- Defenders are only allowed in the defensive zone. Midfielders
are allowed in all 3 zones. Forwards are only allowed in the
forward zone
- The ball cannot be passed over more than 2 zones
- Goals can only be scored from within the forward zone

Warm up game: Tails

- Each student has one sash tucked into the back of their
shorts
- Aim of the game is to protect your sash but also steal as
many from others as possible
- Players with the most sashes win
- Cant hold onto your sash, no aggressive stealing
- Play 2 games: half the gym and full size gym
(10 mins)

CONCLUSION
Sharing, Explaining and Reviewing Inquiry
Share time. Student reflection. What do they now know?
Assessment Criteria: Assessment OF Learning
Observe students abilities throughout the lesson, determine whether
or not they are competent with completing each skill
Safety is a big issue with the equipment. Students who cannot
participate safely will be given a warning and then asked to sit out
Students will be able to test their combined skills in the modified
game of hockey
Discuss the skills learned at the end of the lesson

Throw, throw, throw

- Two groups of equal size face each other
- Each player has a tennis/hockey ball
- On the whistle, players push their ball over a line in the
direction of the opposite team
- After a set time, balls are counted to see who has the
fewest balls
*Must roll the ball along the ground
* Stop the ball before you roll it back to the other side
(10 mins)
Passing in pairs
- Demonstrate the 2 types of passing (hit, push). Remind
students how to trap
- Students pair up and are spaced out 5-10 metres apart
- Take it in turns passing and trapping the ball correctly
*Have your hands in the right position on the stick (show)
* Trap the ball before you hit it

Lesson Plan Template

- Players should rotate positions regularly

- Sticks must be on the ground at all times
- No body contact is allowed
- Players must be 3 sticks length away on free plays

*Use inside of the stick to pass

(10 mins)
Dribble relay
- Cones are set up to dribble around (left on the way up,
right on the way back)
- 5 groups (4-5 on each cone)
- Move slowly through the course first and eventually
conduct a relay
- Pass to next student when they are close to the start of
the line
*Control is more important than speed
* Keep the ball close to the stick when dribbling
(10 mins)
Hit 3 and go
- Modification of kick ball
- A batter hits 3 consecutive balls into the playing area
- Run between cones as many times as possible, counting
runs
- When the fielders have returned the balls to a designated
area, they must yell out stop
- Can only dribble and pass with sticks
*Fielders must communicate with each other
* Fielders should consider where they position themselves
on the field
(15 mins)
Modified game
-3 teams, 6 on the court at any given time
- Goals can only be scored from the forward zone
- No goalkeepers
- Free pass for players that are infringed
- Tackle: talk about putting the stick in, swinging etc.
(30 mins)
