Assessment

*The state of matter depends

on how fast the molecules
move.

Standard3.2.4.A1:Identifyand
classifyobjectsbasedontheir
observableandmeasurablephysical
properties.Compareandcontrastsolids,
liquids,andgasesbasedontheir
properties.

*What are the three states of

matter?

*To introduce the topic, students

will watch a Study Jams video
on properties of matter. This
video explains the molecules of
each matter and how they differ
from one another.
*Read What is Matter by Don
L Curry to inform the students
of the examples of each type of
matter.
*Three-Fold Pamphlet where the
students will draw a picture of
each state of matter and draw
what the molecules will look like
inside each item. --A
*Root Beer Float Lab
Experiment- Students will follow
lab worksheet while making
predictions, testing hypothesis
and following lab-safety rules.
Students will write a conclusion
report of what they discovered.Team teach, using math,
students will measure the
volume of their root beer
floats.--D
*Molecules in Matter ActivityThree students will be given
trash-bag and balloon
molecules and the students

. Formative:
* Students will distinguish the
different states of matter by
drawing their molecules form on
the three-fold pamphlet.
*Root beer float lab- working
with partners to complete the
lab, second part of the lab will
have students measuring the
volume of the materials they
are using.
* Writing assignment, which
students write out the different
properties of matter in a
paragraph form. Students will
include examples and describe
the root beer float lap in their
paragraph.
*Heating and Cooling LabStudents will focus on
measuring the volume and
mass of the solids and liquids
and determine the temperature
at which each the liquid freezes.
*Students will determine the
differences of matters by the
molecules as represented by
balloons. Students will move to
each person represented when
the teacher calls that matter.

*Matter is anything that

takes up space as a solid,
liquid or gas.
*Heat makes molecules
move fast and cold makes
molecules slow down.
*When a gas is turned into a
liquid it is called
condensation.
*When liquid is turned into a
gas it is called evaporation.

S4.C.1.1.1: Use physical properties

[e.g., mass, shape, size, volume,
color, texture, magnetism, state
(i.e., solid, liquid, and gas),
conductivity (i.e., electrical and
heat)] to describe matter.

AnchorDescriptorS4.C.1.1:Describe
observablephysicalpropertiesofmatter.

*Which state has the fastest

molecules? Which has the
slowest?
*What temperature is the
freezing point? Melting point?
Boiling point?
*What is it called when a
liquid changes into a gas?
Gas to a liquid?

will have to decide which

student is which matter.--B
*Matter is Poppin DisplayStudents will focus write a
paragraph of what they have
learned so far in the unit,
including the different types of
matter, the root beer float lab
and examples of each type of
matter that they see in
everyday life. --C
*Heating and Cooling Lab- this
lab would focus on liquids, and
what happens when the student
either heat or freeze their liquid.
The students will measure the
volume of the liquid and weight
the mass of the solid and see
the differences between the
two.

Areas where unit will connect to companion unit.
*Measuring the volume of the liquids during the Root Beer Float Lab
* Measuring volume and mass during Heating and Cooling Lab
A)

For example, the teacher will

tell the students to move to the
person who represents gas.
Then the students will stand by
the student whose balloons
represent the molecules of a
gas.
Summative:
*20 question test on different
states of matter and their
properties.
*Project- Students will create a
poster about one of the three
states of matter. They will
present it to the class and the
posters will be hung around the
room.
