Virtual Field Trips: What are they?

A virtual field trip (VFT) is a guided exploration through the web that organizes a
collection of pre-screened, thematically based web pages into a structured online
learning experience. (Foley, 2003).

The Benefits of Virtual Tours and Field Trips

Allows students to travel and see places that would be too far away or too expensive
to visit.
Present images from a variety of viewpoints and at many different scales.
Supports visual learners as well as EL Learners.
Budget Friendly
If a virtual field trip is conducted in the same meticulous fashion as a real-life field trip,
students should be able to acquire the same cognitive and affective gains that previous
research has found. When this is possible, an entirely new world of experiences will be
opened to all students regardless of the school field trip budget, as they can all experience
firsthand the potential of the Internet as a valid curricular device (Mandel, n.d).

Talk Shows in the Classroom: What are

they?

Students role-play key characters from one or several texts, while other students roleplay interviewers or reporters. Often, teachers will host, directing the flow of
questions and answers among characters and reporters. After the class has experience
with this strategy, a student might take on the role of host.

The Benefits of using Talk Show Form

Students find this motivating and memorable.
Draws upon their interpretations and their imaginations,
Students can demonstrate their understanding, synthesize information, and make
sophisticated connections between texts and their lives.
By deciding how to communicate their understanding to an audience, students are
challenged to interpret texts persuasively.
Role-playing helps students to empathize with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Integration of many subjects that align with standards.

Myhistro
myHistro is a storytelling tool that allows you to place events both geographically and
on a timeline to tell a story. Users create stories that can have multiple events each of
which takes place in a different time and place.
The tool allows you to incorporate video, images, and text to narrate the story for users
as they click through.

Using MyHistro in the Classroom

myHistro could be used as either a teaching and presentational tool or as a project for
students.
The combination of creating a timeline and narrative and placing those within a
geographical location require students to practice arranging and interpreting events in
both time and space.
Creating a story could help students review a unit or review for an exam, either in a
group or individually. Each student is listed as an author and contributed an event to
the story.
myHistro would also be useful as a pre- or post-lesson resource for students or as a
visual during a lesson or lecture.

Benefits of MyHistro
Allows students to be more creative when creating timelines.
Makes timelines more engaging rather than just writing on paper
Allows pictures/videos that may help visual learners, ELs, and SNs
Integrated with social media which is appealing to students

Flipped Learning
Flipped learning is a method which allows a teacher or students to create lessons where
others can watch and learn them on their own time.
They can replace traditional homework and provide a medium for students to be able to
go back and review content if they need to.
It is also a visual media so it makes subjects like history more engaging as a whole

Benefits of Flipped Learning

Allows students to view, and review material on their own pace or convenient time.
Students can collaborate to create their own flipped learning lesson.
Allows for easy review because content is always available at the students need.
Students can be introduced to new content and come to class with questions which will facilitate
student centered instruction.
Students who miss a lesson will not fall behind because they can go back and view what they
missed.
Teachers can collaborate with each other to expand a network of knowledge and lessons.

Flipped Learning Tool: Prezi

Prezi is an online tool that turns the idea of slides into one large work area where you
highlight certain things in a sequence that you choose and control. It is a way to look at
broad and subtopics in a visual way. This is helpful because history lends itself to visual
aids.
