DGBMT

With more than 2,600 members the German Society for

Biomedical Engineering within VDE (DGBMT) is the largest
scientific technical association of biomedical engineering in
Germany. It was founded in Frankfurt/Main in 1961 and has
been part of the VDE since 2002.
The DGBMT is a non-profit society which promotes the
development of biomedical technology in Germany by
interdisciplinary knowledge transfer from research to
clinical application,
d
 eveloping statements, analyses and recommendations
on topical issues of medical engineering and
n
etworking engineers, computer scientists, natural scientists and physicians from academia, industry and clinics.

Current major topics of the DGBMT are:

Diagnostic imaging
Innovative therapeutic systems
Intelligent assistance systems
Interventional techniques
In vitro technologies
Medical information systems and telemedicine
Prostheses and implants
Cross-cutting issues and key technologies

Events and publications

The DGBMT organizes and supports a large number of
events such as expert talks, workshops and conferences.
The focus is on the full range of issues related to innovative biomedical engineering from research to clinical
application. The biggest event is the BMT - Biomedical
Technology Congress - the annual conference of the
DGBMT which is the most important research conference
for biomedical engineering in the German-speaking area
with about 800 participants.

The scientific journal of the DGBMT is Biomedical

Engineering/Biomedical Technology. In addition, the
DGBMT issues studies and position papers on a regular
basis. The aim is to identify important issues of medical
engineering and develop recommendations for improving
the environment for research and development in the field
of medical technology.

Projects, prizes and commitment

The DGBMT office deals with major topical issues in the
framework of projects. In particular, these include projects
in accompanying research and networking to accelerate the
transfer of ideas from research to patient care.
Examples are:
S
upporting research on mobile diagnostic systems
(supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and
Research)
Accompanying research on intelligent implants

(supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and
Research)
Cluster MedizinTechnik.NRW
(engl. Cluster Medical Engineering, supported by the
Federal Ministry for Innovation, Science, Research and
Technology of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia)

To honor notable work and projects in the field of biomedical engineering, the DGBMT regularly awards prizes:
D
GBMT prize of the Klee family foundation for the
promotion of young scientists
(endowed with EUR 5,000)
DGBMT student competition
(endowed with a total of EUR 2,000)
Prize for patient safety in medical engineering

(endowed with a total of EUR 6,500; together with the Alliance for Patient Safety (APS); donated by Dr. Hans Haindl)
The Young Forum BMT addresses its initiative to students,
doctoral candidates and young professionals interested in
biomedical technology and invites them regularly to take part in
an exchange of information on the occasion of the BMT annual
conference.

Experts of the DGBMT

The experts of the DGBMT are organized in various committees. The board of directors is elected by the members for a
period of three years and is the main decision-making body
of the technical society. The council of the DGBMT advises
the board with respect to the performance of its duties and
represents in particular over 20 technical committees of the
DGBMT.
The committees deal with key research and innovation
topics of biomedical engineering. It is here that the ideas for
medical engineering of the future are born. The committees play a key role in shaping the technical content of the
DGBMT annual conference. They also organize professional
events and issue publications on a regular basis.

VDE Networking the future

VDE, the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information
Technologies, is one of the largest technical and scientific
associations in Europe. We are a partner of industry, science
and politics and are committed to new technologies and
their applications. Our members are our capital: the leading
experts of the electrical engineering and IT sector from
science and industry. The full range of our industry meets at
VDE from research, development and application to sales
and marketing.

Exploiting synergies
VDE stands for teamwork: Five technical societies, including
the DGBMT, work together with the standardization and
product testing sectors towards a common goal for the
transfer of knowledge and information in the key technologies such as information and communication technology,
micro and nano system technology and automation technology.
From standardization to product certification the DKE
German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information
Technologies of DIN and VDE is responsible for the standardization of information technology systems and devices
among others. The VDE Institute carries out the testing of
information technology and other electrotechnical components and systems. Their results provide development
engineers with valuable information for product design. At
the same time their ideas are directly used in the ongoing
development of product standards.
