Learning From Failure
Through my first two years of high school I coasted through my writing classes.
Everything went well until junior year. I had a new teacher named Mrs. Drewing. She gave us
research papers that were expected to be 10 pages long in MLA format. It was when I was doing
these papers that I realized that my writing skills were blunt and needed to be honed. This
realization came to me when even I started to think that my papers were of low quality. Since
Im not very fond of doing the bare minimum I started going to her every day after school to
better my writing skills. I had not been doing well in her class and wanted to start making better
marks. She would help me with my vocabulary and grammar so I could start implementing more
sophisticated words and express myself easier. This made my writing skills much better and
eventually I started to do well. After a while we started to form a special bond and this greatly
helped me. Instead of thinking that writing class was boring, I know found it extremely
interesting and fun. Those long research papers were no longer a struggle and doing one was like
going on an adventure. Mrs. Drewing taught me everything I have ever learned and I have her to
thank for making me the writer I am today. She knew exactly how to teach me. Since I liked
math, she broke writing and grammar down into an equation that made me understand the
process. This is the educational experience that influenced my literacy narrative.
