Session Objectives
Internet Safety
To allow participants time to investigate a range of
online resources related to safer online searching
and practices.
To afford participants ample opportunities to reflect
upon, discuss and plan for safer online practices in
their own classrooms and school communities.
To build awareness of a wide range of primary and
post primary internet safety materials that can be
used to support the SPHE curriculum.

What can schools do to promote safe use of the


Internet in teaching and learning?
1. Implement and update their Acceptable Use Policy
(AUP)
2. Be part of a filtering/monitoring system
3. Educate students on how to be safe online and
when using ICT
Combine all three strategies to empower online learners
and support pupils in becoming digitally literate.

We are going to take you through a six step approach to enabling Google

safer internet practices in the home and school environment.

Schools can embed or share links and documents from

site
Teachers can use www.webwise.ie/ to complement their

AUP (acceptable usage policy)
School communities can avail of up to date research

Safe Searching
Kidrex & SearchyPants

There are child friendly search engines such as Kidrex


and SearchyPants that can be used as an alternative to
Google. Both resources were used at an earlier stage in
this weeks course in finding and selecting information.

Tablet e-Safety
Setting Parental Controls

Free apps for content filtering and safe internet


searching such as Mobicip.
Through the Settings - General - Restrictions pathway
on iPads you can enable safer searching and privacy
settings across the device.

In App Purchases

On a smartphone or tablet device can you follow this brief guide to


turning off in-app purchases? These active restrictions can act as parental
controls with an embedded passcode ensuring safer usage
