Retinopathy of Prematurity

(ROP)

Introduction

First described by Theodore L. Terry


in 1942
The risk of visual impairment can be
minimized with carefull
management.
It is estimated that ROP accounts for
19% of pediatric blindness
worldwide.

ROP is an ischemic retinopathy of


premature and low birth weight
infant.

Infant Requiring
Examination
All infant with a birth weight of less
than 1500 g
All infant with a gestational age of 30
weeks or less
Selected infant with 1500-2000 g or
EGA greater than 30 weeks with an
unstable clinical course.

Timing of Examination
Between 4 and 6 weeks of postnatal
age.
Within the 31 st to 33 rd week of
postmenstrual age.
