students have access to a smart phone to bring to

class, if not then they look on with a partner
.students should already have a knowedge base of the
principles of training and how to create a training
program from previous lesson, but will quickly go back
over to access prior knowledge.

Introduction and Outline of Lesson:

The lessons I have created will incorporate both Physical education and Physics in a year 10 Human Movement Movement unit but could also be used as a
year 11 unit of study also. Before the unit begins, students complete a battery of fitness tests in order to gain a base line measurement for their written
assignment. They are then taken through a PowerPoint illustrating the principles of training as a refresher and how to create a training program. Todays lesson
mainly focuses on the use of the Iron Path application to analyse students movement of exercises such as a bench press, squat or dead lift, and give feedback
on both technique, but also velocity of bar speed, the acceleration of the bar and the force applied. This gives the students the opportunity to use an application
to help them to monitor their progress throughout the training program and use it as a reference tool during their written assignment to finish the unit.
Students will also learn how to manually calculate these different variables that way they can fully grasp what the application is trying to show them. This
enables students to use high levels of thinking by interpretating the data they collect in a relatable way.
A formative and peer assessment / reflection activity will finish the lesson. Students will need to complete a PNI (Positive, Negative and Interesting) activity
individually. The feedback is to be completed and at the conclusion of the activity the teacher will collect this information and closely depict each assessment.
This will enable me as a teacher to evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson and wether or not it engaged with students.

Lesson

Engage Phase- Collaborative

Brainstorm Activity (5 minutes)
Students are asked if they
have ever calculated speed,
velocity, acceleration or other
performance variables
Activity will help activate prior
knowledge of students from
previous lesson
Explore Phase- Familiarisation with
the iron path application and how it
relates to their programs, training,
and assignment (5-10 minutes)
Ask students to download the
application and show them how to
use it via power point showing step
by step instructions.
Purpose of this activity is for
students to simply play
around and familiarise
themselves with Iron Path
Students can use the
application for bodyweight
exercises if they want to.
Explain Phase- Explain process
want students to follow for todays
lesson (15-20 minutes)
Need to explain to students
that they will be calculating
the velocity, speed and
acceleration and force
manually.
Teacher will explain how to

Students seated in rows, separating disruptive students

if need be.

Ensure each student has one smart phone

Alternative option is to work in pairs

Inform students of what exactly

these performance variables

are and how they can relate to

their programs.
If students know how to
manually calculate these
variables they get up to show
the class.

Laptop
Projector

Show students how the

application works, and
how it relates to their
future classes.
Have students explore
application and asking
prompting questions like
what sort of exercise
would this be a good tool
to measure?
Use student ratings
received to get an idea for
how detailed the
explanations need to be in
next phase of the lesson

Elaborate Phase- Student Time (2530 mins)

Students work in pairs on body
weight exercises that can be
uploaded to the application so
that students get a taste of how
to use it.
Students then collect an array of
exercises that they can use.

Evaluate Phase- Peer Assessment

and Reflection of Lesson Activity (5
mins)
This component of the lesson
will consist of students doing
a peer assessment /
reflection with their pair
It will be a formative
assessment and students will
complete a PNI (Positive,
Negative and an
Improvement)

Students will be encouraged to work in pairs

Students use time effectively and copy results in
their workbook
Classroom tables and chair cleared out of the way
to allow for room for students to trial app

Teacher moving around

the classroom at all times
providing assistance and
feedback to students
Give encouragement and
show students how to use
the app further if they are
still struggling

Smart phone
Work tables and chairs

Tell students to give

honest feedback of the
classroom activities and
how students performed

Blank paper

Ensure students remain in same pairs

This is so they assess someone they have been
working with during the tasks
Teacher to ensure they collect the assessments
from students immediately after completion.

Instructions on How to Calculate speed velocity force and acceleration

These instructions are to be used in the Explain Phase of the Lesson.
Calculating speed and velocity with worked example:
The average speed during the course of a motion is often computed using the following formula:
In contrast, the average velocity is often computed using this formula
Let's begin implementing our understanding of these formulas with the following problem:
Q: While on vacation, Lisa travelled a total distance of 440 miles. Her trip took 8 hours. What was her average speed?
To compute her average speed, we simply divide the distance of travel by the time of travel.
Lisa averaged a speed of 55 miles per hour. She may not have been travelling at a constant speed of 55 mi/hr. She undoubtedly, was stopped at some instant in time (perhaps
for a bathroom break or for lunch) and she probably was going 65 mi/hr at other instants in time. Yet, she averaged a speed of 55 miles per hour. The above formula represents
a shortcut method of determining the average speed of an object.
Calculating force with worked example:
the acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely
proportional to the mass of the object.
This verbal statement can be expressed in equation form as follows:
a=F/m
The above equation is often rearranged to a more familiar form as shown below. The net force is equated to the product of the mass times the acceleration.
F = m a.
Consistent with the above equation, a unit of force is equal to a unit of mass times a unit of acceleration. By substituting standard metric units for force, mass, and acceleration
into the above equation, the following unit equivalency can be written.
1 Newton = 1 kg m/s2
The definition of the standard metric unit of force is stated by the above equation. One Newton is defined as the amount of force required to give a 1-kg mass an acceleration of
1 m/s/s.
