colour: complementary colours, hue, intensity texture: textures created with a variety of tools, materials, and techniques value: gradations of value to create illusion of depth, shading Lesson: In the first lesson, students watched a modelled demonstration of adding black and white to create shades and tints. The students then chose a colour for their monochromatic colour scheme, which was to be used for the ice cream portion of their ice cream cone. They then added white to the colour to create different tints. After they painted four visibly different colours, they set it off to dry. They then added black to the colour to create a shade, which was to be used for the cone portion of the ice cream cone. During the next lesson, they chose a complementary colour and painted the background using texture tools. They then cut out the various tints from the previous lesson into the shape of ice cream scoops while the background dried. Then they arranged the scoops in a gradient scale and glued them in the shape of an ice cream cone, adding a sparkly cherry to the top of their ice cream if they so desired. This will take approximately two 50 minute blocks. Materials and Supplies: - paint - paper - paintbrushes - water jugs (buckets for clean-up) - paper towel

Grade 2: Optical Illusion Art
line: horizontal, vertical, diagonal lines; lines that show motion (e.g. pointy, curvy); lines inside shapes shape: symmetrical shapes space: overlapping of objects to show depth colour: secondary colours (various colours made by mixing equal amounts of primary colours, such as violet, orange, green); mixing of colours with a limited palette Lesson: In the first lesson, students will view examples of optical illusion art and then create their own. They will use a pencil and ruler to draw lines and then use the ruler to draw symmetrical shapes across the page. In the second lesson, the students will then use markers, using at least one secondary colour, to colour in the lines and shapes, alternating to create contrast. This will take approximately two 50 minute blocks. Materials and Supplies: - paper - ruler - pencils - markers

Grade 6: Zentangle Flower
line: lines that direct the viewers attention; lines that create the illusion of force or movement (e.g. wavy and wiggly lines used in op art) shape: exaggerated proportions, motifs, fonts; geometric (e.g. conical, pyramidal) shapes and forms value: gradation Lesson: During the first lesson, students will look through zentangle art projects and using post-it notes, find and highlight patterns and designs that they feel drawn to. They will then begin by drawing their flower on one of the corners and then begin drawing their zentangle designs with a sharpie. Over the next two lessons, students will continue their zentangle designs. When they are finished, they will choose one colour and add white to create different tints. They will then create a gradient scale of the tints moving away from the flower. This will take approximately three 50 minute blocks. Materials and Supplies: - paint - paper - paintbrushes - water jugs (buckets for clean-up) - paper towel - sharpies - rulers
