Lesson 2

The Heart
Lesson plan:
Grade/ Grade Band: 6B2

Topic: Heart

Lesson # Circulatory System in

a series of Heart lessons

Brief Lesson Description:

The heart is one part of circulatory system. Its consist from many parts which have functions
to contribute on heart working. The heart is in the left side of the human chest. The heart
shape is conical where the peak is on the bottom and the base is on the top of the conical.
Also, the heart is surrounding by the lungs.
Performance Expectation(s):
Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems
composed of groups of cells. (The students able to imitate the heart sounds (Lub-Dub). Also,
they are able to feel if their hearts work or not by putting their hands on the left side of their
chest (on their heart). Addition to that, students can know if their heart beats are normal or
not. Thats through speed of heart beats. When they do exercise, their heart beats will be
faster than If they relax and sit without working).
Specific Learning Outcomes:
What is the hearts?
What are the heart parts?
How the heart work?
Narrative / Background Information
Prior Student Knowledge:
The students may know the sound of the heart beats.
They know what will happen if the heart stop working.
They know when the heart beats be faster and when be normal.
Science & Engineering
Practices:
Obtaining, Evaluating, and
Communicating

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Crosscutting Concepts:

Structure and Function

(heart definition, heart
parts and its function)

Structure and Function (picture

of heart and its parts to
describe how the heart work).

Information (at the end of

the lesson I will give
students a small card to
write words or sentence on
what they learn through
class).
Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
May have a problem on labeling the heart model. Explain in specific how the heart model
work and through that students will not mistake on labeling heart model. Because the heart
working is as a cycle which will facilitate to the learner how can keep the names and

functions on their minds.

LESSON PLAN 5-E Model
ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate
Questions:
Discussion with whole class about the heart
Do you know the heart sound?
Put your hand on your heart (left side of your chest) and feel if your heart is working
or not.
What will happen if the heart stop working suddenly?
When your heart beats may be faster and when may be normal?
How many times does the normal heart pump (beats) in one minutes?
Cross words puzzle (where the students should fine some of words which are related to the
heart from the puzzle).
Video (3 minutes) about the heart sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44HztDzE1EQ
EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:
What is the heart (they need to put their hand on their heart to feel and hear how their heart
work).
EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:
Presentation
What is the heart?
Some of key terms
What are the heart parts?
Vocabulary:
-Right Atrium

-Left Atrium

-Right Ventricle

-Left Ventricle

-Tricuspid Valve

-Mitral Valve

-oxygenated

-deoxygenated

-Aorta

-Pulmonary Artery

-Pulmonary Vein

-Vena Cava

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

Do some of discussion about the heart parts and how does the heart work.
EVALUATE:
Small board activity (give each student a small board to write anything learned through the
class even in one sentence or one word).
Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion): What did you learn about the heart?
Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report): Next class I will ask students to create a
heart model through using a clay.

Reflection:

I was very confident from myself while its a first time to teach science lesson. My
class was active and the students were interact with me and they understand the
lesson. In this lesson I control the students behaviors and that was through giving
them an individual activity which make them busy. Also, at the last of my lesson, I
discover that most students understand the lesson by giving them a small card to
write anything they learned.
