Tips For Better Practices

1. Youth practices should not be any more then 1 hour and 15 minutes to
1 hour and 30 minutes. If you have an organized practice plan, you
should be able to get through everything you need to in that time.
2. Have your practice plan written down before practice begins. Have the
time allotted for each drill as well. Try to stick with the plan. Do not be
tempted to stick with something longer because the players are not
getting it. Move on and come back to it in the next practice.
3. Keep practice segments short. Drills should not last any more then 1015 minutes.
4. Keep the players engaged in activity. When possible, have one ball for
each player when doing dribbling drills. When working in groups, do
not have lines of any more then four. Waiting time should be minimal.
5. Try to make everything as competitive as you can. Have them compete
against themselves, each other, the clock or a certain score. You can
have consequences for losing but keep it simple and quick. Five pushups or sprinting down and back are enough.
6. Play 1 on 1 every night and put a maximum on the number of dribbles
they can have. We usually use three. Set up the 1 on 1 different every
night. Play from the top, wing, post, off the skip pass.
7. Try to end practice on a positive note. Take the time to do something
which will have them leaving the gym eager to come back for more.
