GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
I will be participating in the University of Cincinnati Marching Band during my time at college and specifically over the
course of my first semester, I will be focusing on improving my leadership skills through observation and practice. I will
achieve this by observing the leadership techniques of everyone around me as we work together over the course of
marching band season. I will also build my leadership skills my being a role model for other members of the band and
doing my best as a band member.
This experience is personally meaningful as band is a large part of my life and has been since I first picked up an
instrument in 5th grade. The possibility of using my time in band to improve myself and become a better overall leader and
person both in band and in my future career and life.
My goals for this experience are hard to physically quantify. I aim to become a more capable and developed
individual, as well as a more effective leader. I also aim to improve my skills as a band member and I aim to help my band
and fellow band members improve and succeed. Specifically, I hope to help the band put on high quality shows
consistently all year, as well as performing our best as an exhibition band at the Bands of America competition occurring
this year in Indiana.
This experience started on my first day of band camp freshman year of college, and will end when I finish my
time in band. However as one of my main goals is to perform well individually and as a group over the course of a
football season, the experience will begin fall of 2016 and will end with the end of the football season in winter of 2016.

Formulate and manage a shared vision and develop goals towards its achievement.
In order to operate as a group, there have to be cohesive goals that the group must work towards. In band, there
are weekly goals of learning specific music as well as accomplishing a satisfactory performance for the football
game at the end of the week. However, the shared vision of the entire band is to perform a good show at the end of
the season for the football bowl game. Individual goals within a section are formulated by the section leaders and
upperclassmen. These goals focus more specifically on achievements necessary for accomplishing the larger goal.
The goals and vision of the band will help me to learn how to develop these skill and goal making abilities outside
of band and on my own.
Motivate and collaborate effectively with others towards completion of shared projects or goals.
There are times when band becomes difficult and often conflicts with other plans, classes, or personal time. It is
during these times that the leaders of the band step up and encourage the members struggling as well as keeping
them in band through times of trouble and making troublesome people come to practice. Learning to work with
and guide other people in their efforts and tasks will carry over to other tasks than just marching band.
Identify personal strengths and areas of growth and evaluate opportunities to maximize skills and abilities.
Identifying my personal strength and areas of growth is a primary part of individual practice in marching band. It
is necessary to continually hone your strengths and to fix any mistakes that may become evident through practice.
This is perhaps the most important step in learning and developing. This step will take upwards of 10 hours a week
of practice and evaluation. Accomplishing this learning outcome will lead to a more developed learning method
that can be applied to learning and growing as an individual and as a leader.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
I will keep a record of my band activities in the form of social media and a journal. I will assemble these forms of media
into a blog and will record the things that happen at each band event as well as problems that arise with planning, with
interpersonal relationships, and with performances. This will lead me to see where the problems lie and what I can do to
fix them, and eventually, what other people do to fix the problems. This method of reflection will allow me to see what I
have accomplished in my time in band and will also help me to grow and develop my problem solving and planning skills.
