Background
Nigeria was a British colony until 1960 when it gained
independence.
The country was thrown into total civil war by 1967 due to
various cultural and political groups fighting for power.
It would not be until 1999 for Nigeria to regain democracy
after 32 years and several military takeovers.

#BringBackOurGirls
Nearly a month ago, 276 girls
were abducted from their
school.
The US and UK have sent
help to try and find the girls.
The abductors said that
women should not be
educated and instead
should get married off.
Women in Nigeria
Nigeria ranks 106 out of 136 countries ranked
on the Global Gender Gap Index.
In certain Nigerian states, Sharia law is
enforced, meaning women can be
sentenced to extreme punishments
(including death) for not adhering to the
muslim code.
Marriage
Nigeria has some of the highest rates of early
marriage in the world.
When the girls are married off, they receive little to
no education. Only 2% of girls that get married
get an education.
3 out of 4 girls that are married off cannot read.
