    WhatsHappening?
    Almosteverybodyhassomeknowledgeofthecurrentrefugeecrisis,whetheritis
    extensiveorlimited.BecauseoftheturmoilinSyria,peoplearefleeingthecountryinfearfor
    theirlives.TherefugeesstartedoutbygoingtonearbyMiddleEasterncountries,including
    LebanonandJordan,butoncetheystartedclosingtheirborders,therefugeeslookedtoEurope.
    OnepopulardestinationisGermany,asthecountryhaswelcomedcountlessSyrianrefugeesand
    otherMiddleEasternmigrants.However,someGermansarenottoohappyabouttheircountrys
    hospitalitytothoseinneed.
    EarlierinOctoberofthisyear,an
    enormousantiIslamrallywasheld
    bytheorganizationPEGIDA,or
    PatrioticEuropeansAgainstthe
    IslamizationoftheWest(in
    English).PEGIDAwasfoundedin
    October2014,andhasbeenstaging
    ralliesforoverayeartoprotect
    Germanculture.Inresponsetotherefugeecrisis,
    PEGIDAhasbeenattackingChancellorMerkeland
    thegovernment,sayingthattheinfluxofMuslims
    wouldslowlyeraseGermanculture.Whenthe
    Germangovernmentrecentlydecidedtoaccepta

    waveofrefugeesthatwouldtotaloveramillion,thegroupwasincensed.
    PEGIDAscausehasnotgoneunheard,althoughpeoplemightbetakingandideathat
    startedoutastryingtopreserveGermancultureandturningitintoanincrediblyaggressive
    message.Inreactiontotheirmessageandotherpublicfears,therehasbeenaswellin
    antimigrantviolence.Hatecrimes,includingarsonandotherviolentattacksonrefugeeshelters,
    haverisen.Thealarmcausedbytherefugeeisnotunwarrantedeveryoneisafraidofchange.
    Butchangeisinevitable,andthedesperaterefugeesseekingasylumtonotdeservetofleefrom
    oneplaceofviolencejusttoenteranotherdangerouscountryforthem.
    WhatDoesThisMean?
    AlthoughmanyarevisiblyunhappywithGermanysopendoorpolicyanddonot
    welcometherefugees,thereareotherorganizationsthatcounterPEGIDAsdemonstrations.
    Thesegroupsarecrucialinshowingthatnoteverybodyisopposedtohelpingasylumseekers.
    ManyviewPEGIDAasarightwing,xenophobicorganizationwitharacistmessagethatdoes
    notrepresentthecountry,andareworkingtoconveythatthroughcounterdemonstrations.They
    wanttoshowthatmostofthecountrywelcomesandisexcitedaboutdiversity,anddoesnot
    condoneanyofthehatredandviolencethatseemstobeaccepted.
    Germanyisnotaloneinthepublicandpoliticaldividecausedbytherefugeecrisis.Other
    countriescitizensarealsomakingtheiropinionsheard,butitisimportanttomaintainabalance
    betweenpleasingthecitizensandmakingethicaldecisions.Despitethediscontentofthe
    citizens,itisclearthatGermanyisstillacceptingrefugees.However,stepshavebeentakento
    controlthedifferencesbetweenrefugeesandmigrants.PeopleimmigratingtoGermanythatare

    fromsafecountriesarebeingdeportinginordertomakeroomforrefugees.Aswintersetsin,
    refugeesareinneedoffriendly,hospitablecountriesmorethanever.
