‘Standard Specifications
for
Concrete Joint-Sealer, Hot-Poured Elastic Type
AASHTO DESIGNATION: M 173-84 (1990)
(ASTM DESIGNATION: D 1190-74 (1980))
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers concrete
joint sealer of the hot-poured elastic type,
intended for use in sealing joints in con-
crete pavements, bridges, and other struc~
tures.
2, REFERENCED DOCUMENTS
2.1 AASHTO Standards:
T40 Sampling Bituminous
Materials
T187 Concrete Joint Sealers
3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 The joint sealer shall be composed
of a mixture of materials that will form a
resilient and adhesive compound capable
of effectively sealing joints in concrete
against the infiltration of moisture and for-
cciga material throughout repeated cycles
‘of expansion and contraction with temper-
ature changes, and that will not flow from
the joint or be picked up by vehicle tres at
‘summer temperature. The material shall
be capable of being brought to a uniform
pouring consistency suitable for com-
pletely filling the joints without inclusion
of large air holes or discontinuities and
without damage to the material
4, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1. Pour point shall be atleast 11C
(2OF) lower than the safe-heating tempera
ture, which isthe maximum temperature
to which the material may be heated with-
‘out exceeding the permitted flow.
4.2. Penetration at 25C (77F) 150 g, 5
sec, shall not exceed 90)
4.3. Flow at 60¢ (140F) shall not
exceed 5 mm.
4.4 Bond—The sealer shall be tested
s—17.8C (OF) for five complete cycles.
‘The development at any time during the
test procedure of a crack, separation, oF
‘other opening that any point is over 6.4
‘mm (% in.) deep, inthe sealer or between
the sealer and mortar block, shall consti-
tute failure of the test specimen. The
depth of the crack, Separation, or opening
shall be measured perpendicular to the
side of the sealer showing the defect. At
least two test specimens in a group of
three representing a given sample of sealer
shall meet this requirement for bood.
4.5. Retest for Bond—I the first set of
specimens prepared fails to meet the
requirements for bond, repeat the bond test
ona new set of specimens, provided the
safe-heating temperature is found to be
more than 11C (20F) higher than the tem-
perature of the material used in pouring
the bond test specimens that failed. The
specimens for retest shall be prepared with
the joint sealer heated to a higher tempera-
ture than was used for the specimens that
failed, but this temperature shall be at
least 11C (20F) below the safe-heating
temperature.
5. SAMPLING
5.1 Samples for testing shall each
consist of not kss than a 4.5 kg (10 Ib)
sample from each batch ofthe joint sealer.
Abatch shall be considered as all finished
material that was manufactured simultane-
ously or continuously asa unit between
the time of compounding and the time of
packaging or placing in shipping cootain-
ers; each package or container shall be
marked properly to indicate clearly the
batch of which it forms a part. The mate-
Fil shall be sampled in accordance with
the requirements of the Standard Methods
of Sampling Bituminous Materials
(AASHTO T 40) for solid materials in
cakes.
6. TEST METHODS
6.1 Determine the physical require
‘ments enumerated in this specificatio
accordance with the Methods of Testing
Concrete Joint Sealers (AASHTO T 187).
APPENDIX
‘AL. Precautions on Use and Applica-
tion of Concrete Joint Sealer, Hot Poured
Elastic Type
ALL Some, if not all, of the known
materials conforming to this specification
may be damaged by beating t0fo0 high @
temperature, reheating, or by heating for
too long atime. Care shouldbe exercised
to secure equipment for heating and appli
cation that i suitable for the purpose. The
material shouldbe ated in a ketle or
melter, constructed asa double boiler with
the space betwocn the inner and outer
shells filled with olor other heat transfer
medium. Positive temperature control,
mechanical agitation, and recirculating
[pumps should be provided. Other methods
of indzect heating satistactory tothe
Engineer may be used. Direct heating
rust not be used. As a means of ascertain-
ing whether or not the material covered by
this specification is being or has beca
damaged in the field as a result of over-
heating, reheating, or prolonged heating,
flow pave specimens may be prepared
periodically by drawing off sealant
directly from the meiter applicator during
sealing operations and then tested fr flow
according o AASHTO 187 for materials
covered by ths specification, Flow in
‘excess of 20 mm would indicate damage
281282
to material caused by improper heating
procedures.
1.2 Pavement joints in new con-
struction for application of material cov-
cred by this specification should be dry,
clean of all scale, dirt, dust, curing com-
pound, and other foreign matter. The side-
‘walls of the joint space to be sealed should
thea be thoroughly sandblasted, blown
‘lean of loose sand by high-pressure air,
and sealed by use of the melter-applicator
described in AL.1.
A13. When material covered by this
specification is used for maintenance or
rescaling of joints that have previously
contained either similar or dissimilar seal-
ing material, itis recommended that the
Joint be dry, cleaned thoroughly with a

plow, router, wire brush, concrete saw, or
other suitable tool or tools designed for the
purpose of neatly cleaning pavement
Joints. Loose material should be blown
‘out. The sidewalls of the joint space to be
sealed should be thoroughly sandblasted,
blown free of loose sand with high-
pressure air, and then sealed with material
by use of the melter-applicator described
in ALL.
Ald) The use of a backup material or
bond breaker in the bottom of the joint to
be filled with material covered by this
specification is recommended to control
the depth of sealant and achieve the
Aesired shape factor, and to support the
sealant against indentation and sag.
Backup materials and bond breakers

should be compatible with the material,
should not adhere to the sealant, should be
compressible without extruding the seal-
‘ant, and should recover to maintain con-
tact with the joint faces when the joint is
‘open. Due to the elevated temperatures of
the application of material covered by this
specification, care should be taken in the
selection of suitable backup materials.
AILS Care should be practiced in the
application of material covered by this
specification to avoid overfilling of the
joint space. Joints should be filled in a
‘eat workmanlike manner from flush to 5
1mm (or Yis in.) below the adjacent pave
‘ment surface.
