Rationale

This unit entitled Lady Bugs is designed for 2 nd grade. The unit will integrate
many academic disciplines while teaching students about lady bugs with specifics
such as insects, life cycle, habitat, and the benefits of lady bugs.
Students will do a variety of activities to enhance their learning. First students
will explore and introduction to the concept of insects. Then students will learn
specifically about to life cycle of a lady bug. Next students will examine the habitat
of a lady bug. Finally students will determine benefits of the lady bug.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards
( S3.B.1.1.1, 3.1.3.A3, BIO. B.4.2) identify and describe the functions of basic
structure of animals and plants the students will be producing works of art,
speaking and listening during discussions, applying knowledge that enables them to
become independent leaders thought inquiry and design, and study dynamics of
biology, which includes the studies of insects.
When the unit is complete, the students will be able to describe what an
insects is/ isnt, the process of a lady bug life cycle, the habitat in which lady bugs
live, and the benefits ladybugs have. This content is key in a students ability to
understanding, explore, and explain the natural world around them.
