Music Video Conventions

Unit 29 Task 1.5

There are many different genres within the music industry;

they include rock, pop, indie, hip-hop etc. Camera angles
used are different in each music video depending on the
genre of the song. The editing techniques used are very
different, from my research I noticed that the editing
techniques used depend on the genre of the song and
then this impacts the music video.
Rock The Automatic Monster. This song is a very
famous rock song within the rock industry, however not
just the rock industry but the music industry. I noticed
within this music video there were a lot pan shots used, a
pan shot is when the camera moves to the right or left,
this produces a horizontal movement. I feel this links in
well with the song title as it explains how there is a
monster, coming over the hill, the hill I feel represents
the horizon and this is how the pan camera shot links in
well with the lyrics and is very effective for the spectator.
Below is an example of a pan shot:
Mise En Scene include all of the
elements placed in front of the
camera to be photographed, it
includes the lighting, costume and
props used within the video.
There are many different props
used within the music video including lakes, ambulance
etc. I feel that the ambulance links in well as this is what
you would need if you were to be attacked by a monster,
this is very effective to the spectator because it links in
well with the music video and the lyrics used within the
video. I also feel the camping equipment the artists are
carrying throughout the video is very effective as I feel
when you hear the word monster you automatically think
of woods and you generally camp in forests, this links in
well with the lyrics as it connotes the meaning of monster
and how people are generally scared of monsters, e.g.
piece in the video two group members walked into the
back of each other, they reacted as if it was a monster
they walked into. Editing, the editing within the video is

Ben Delaney

very effective as there were a variety of different editing

techniques used; this keeps the video interesting and
keeps the spectator entertained while they are watching
the video. Short shots, long takes, long shots and dissolve
were all used within the video, e.g. I feel that short shots
are very effective as it keeps the video busy, it increases
tension and increases the intensity within the music video,
and these are all ways that make the music video
entertaining for the viewer. Sound is of course very
important within a music video, you can produce a brilliant
music video however it needs the correct sounds in the
background, synchronous sound, theme music, parallel
sound were all used within the music video, I was
impressed with the parallel sound used as it was a
monster sound, this links in well with the whole song, the
other sounds, the song name and the lyrics used within
the music video, I feel it connotes the song as it a
representation of the lyrics and the name of the song.
Oasis Dont look back in anger:
This song is very famous within the world of rock music,
not just rock but all aspects of the industry. I noticed
within the music video a lot of close up shots were used,
a close up camera shot creates tension and creates
excitement for the viewer. Another camera angle used
within the music video was low angle, so the camera was
located below the artists/actors within the music video to
make them look bigger, imposing the idea of power. MiseEn-Scene is all of the elements placed in front of the
camera, e.g. in the dont look back in anger video there
were many props used such as a house, clothing they are
wearing, swimming pool, a London taxi etc. All of the
props used within the video help to make the music video
more interesting, the props used (I feel) link in well with
the song and connote the song and band for what they
are, e.g. London taxi represents the group as they are a
British group. Editing within a music video is very
important, I noticed there were many different editing
techniques throughout the video such as long takes and
fade in, I found that fade in was very effective to me as
the viewer as it made the video much more interesting
and entertaining to watch because it created a sense of

Ben Delaney

emotion going through the singer. Sound must be in a

music video otherwise it is not a music video if this is the
case, within this particular video, theme music was
included throughout, and this is a recurrent melody in the
video creating a balance between the video and the sound
in it.
Below is an example of a close up shot used within the
dont look back in
anger music
video:

Pop
Ellie Golding Burn, this is a very famous song, this song
was released in the summer of 2013 creating a reputation
of the summer theme tune. Several different camera
angles are used in the music video, which include, close
ups, point of view, long shot and low angle. Close ups
within a music video creates tension and excitement for
the viewer. Low angel also makes the artist look bigger
creating the theme of power and leadership throughout
the video.
The location of the music video is mostly in a airfield,
props such as trucks, lights scattered around the airfield
and other people were the main props used within this
video. The lighting in the video was very effective as I felt
it represented and linked in well with the lyrics and name
of the song. The editing within the video was also very
effective, wipes, short takes and dissolves were used, I
feel that by including these editing techniques that it
makes the music video much more interesting for the
viewer. The sounds that are included within the music
video include synchrous sound, dialogues and incidental.
The most effective piece of music in the song I feel is the
incidental music, I feel that the most effective piece of
music played in this music video is the incidental piece, I

Ben Delaney

feel this way because it add excitement and you wonder

what is going to happen in the next stage of the video.
Below are examples of the editing technique Dissolve
used by the producers of Ellie Goldings Burn music video.

Taylor Swift Shake it off, as we know Taylor Swift is very

famous within the music industry. Camera angles, Mise en
Scene, Editing and Sound are the key features that make a
music interesting and entertaining for the viewer. There
were many interesting camera shots such as long shots,
low angle, aerial shot, two shot and tracking shots. I feel
that the long shot was the most effective to me as the
viewer as it showed the entire artist representing power
and authority within the video. Mise en Scene included
other people within the video (extras), one location
throughout the video (a grey room) and there were
different costumes used within the video making it more
interesting for the viewer. Editing is the best and most
effective way to make a effective and interesting music
video for the viewer, long takes, short take and wipes were
used within the video in order to make the video flow. The
final main aspect of a music video is the sound used in the
video, synchrous sound, dialogue and parallel sound I felt
were the most effective sounds used within the video. Of
course if a video has know sound then it will not be a
music video.
Below is the grey room used throughout most of the video.

Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop has a very big influenced on music and within the
music industry. Many people consider hip-hop as being the
most popular genre throughout the music industry. 50
Cent Candy Shop is a very famous song within the
industry, many different camera angles, mise en scene,
editing and sound. The camera shots used included
establishing shots, long shots, short shots, close ups and
wide shots were used in order to make the video

interesting and effective for the viewer and the artist, e.g.
close up, this camera angles creates tension within a
music video.

Ben Delaney

There are many props that are used within the video
including a fast super car, mansion, girls with little
clothing on, 50 Cent dancing with several different women
throughout the video, 50 cent has a lot of jewellery on. 50
cent dancing with several different women throughout the
video indicates the power that is shown by him; the
mansion and super car that was shown throughout the
video also indicated this.
The editing within the video was also very effective to me
as the viewer as it made it more attractive and interesting
to watch rather than just watching the same frame
throughout. A montage editing technique was used in
one part of the video, which I thought was very interesting
and clever, e.g. montage

The sound is this music video is

extremely effective as
synchronous sound; dialogue,
parallel sound and theme music
were all included within the
video. I thought that the them tune/music used, and the
beat that was used throughout the whole music video was
very well thought out and linked in and connoted with the
music video.

Kayne West Stronger is a extremely famous song within

the music industry collecting 161,390,613 views on
YouTube. The camera angles, Mise en Scene, Editing and
Sound used within the video are very important and
extremely effective to the viewer.
The camera angles used within the video include
establishing shots, close up, low angle and two shots were
all included within the music video. Close ups are a very
effective way in order for the video to be interesting for
the viewer. An establishing shot introduces the video to

Ben Delaney

the viewer letting them know what kind of video it is. Mise
en Scene includes the props used within the video, most of
the video is a animation with other people within the
video, the streets of Tokyo are I the video creating a sense
of excitement for the viewer. Editing used in the video, in
my opinion is brilliant as there are many editing
techniques used including fade ins, long taken and
reverse shots. All of these techniques result in the music
video more interesting to watch for the viewer. Sound is
very important in order to make a successful music video,
after analysing this music video I concluded that the
sound included within the video includes synchronous
sound, theme tune, dialogue and contrapuntal sound are
all used within the music video.
Below is an example of Contrapuntal Sound: this is an
example of contrapuntal sound as the image is a dark and
sad image within the video, the theme song in the
background is an upbeat theme tune, this shows that the
sound does not complement with the image on the screen.

Indie
As we know Oasis is very famous Rock/Indie bands
throughout the world that have produced some brilliant
songs over the years. The song I have decided to analyse
is Wonderwall. The camera angles, Mise en Scene,
Editing and sound all work well together in order to

Ben Delaney

produce a professional and entertaining video for the

viewer. There are many different camera angles used
within the video including an establishing shot, close ups,
low angles, wide shots and long shots. All of these shots
work together to produce an entertaining music video for
the viewer. At the start of the video there is a close up of
the artist playing the guitar, this instantly shows you what
kind of song/music video it is. Mise en Scene is very
important within a music video, however this video does
not have that many props in it, I noticed there was chairs
and ladders in the video, I also noticed that near enough
the whole video was recorded in a warehouse, the video
was also black and white which also represents the ethos
of the band. The editing used in the video was not the
best; you can tell that it is an older video comparing it to
some of the modern videos we see today. There was a
montage, long take, dissolve and short takes all within the
video. The sound used in the video includes parallel
sound, dialogue and theme music throughout. All of these
aspects of media come together to make an effective
music video.

Artic Monkeys is a very famous Indie band, I decided to

analyse the song Are you mine? which collected 70, 000,
00 views on YouTube. I must admit that this is not my

Ben Delaney

favourite genre of music however I feel this video is very

effective to me as the viewer. The camera angles used
within the video included lots of close ups, low angles and
two shots. The close ups in this video are very frequent, it
gives you the sense of the artist taking a selfie or
recording it himself the entire video, this is very effective
because it makes you feel that you are there in the video.
The Mise en Scene include a car, glasses and dark clothes
throughout the video, the black and white video and
clothing they are wearing represent the artists and the
ethos of the group. There was not that much editing used
within the video comparing it to the modern day music
videos, however sometimes I feel the less editing used the
more effective it can be, long takes and revers shot were
both used throughout this music video. The sound used
included dialogue and diegetic sound, both of these sound
techniques work well as it blends in well with the video, in
terms of how complicated the video is.
