The month of October brought two exciting things for ACES:
First, I was able to attend the Kansas City Region School Social Worker Association of Missouri conference where
ACES Social Workers Debbie Griffith-Fujinami and Lisa Christmas, along with The Learning Centers Tammy
Oltman, presented on Behavior Intervention Strategies for the Traveling Social Worker. I have to say, we have
some trail blazers! These ladies did a great job of sharing real-life techniques and interventions with a group of
60 individuals. The other amazing thing, Northwest Missouri has 5 of the approximately 60-100 social workers in
this half of the state! We continue to be on the forefront of providing mental health and behavior services in
schools, and this is something to be very proud of!!
Finally, our ACES Board has approved the creation of 2 School Psychologist Intern positions! I am excited and
encouraged to see training and recruitment becoming a priority this year. In the coming months, we will be
working to actively recruit qualified candidates for these openings as we move to enhance our services for the
Fall of 2016.

Discipline
A long-term suspension/change of placement is a suspension in excess of 10 consecutive days OR 10 days
cumulatively where a pattern of suspension is created. To determine whether a pattern is created, school
districts must consider:
1) if the series of removals total more than ten(10) school days cumulatively in a school year;
2) if the childs behavior is substantially similar to the childs behavior in previous incidents that resulted in
the series of removals; and,
3) such additional factors as length of each removal, the total amount of time the child has been removed,
and the proximity of the removals to one another.
Students with disabilities may be long-term suspended or expelled if the conduct leading to the discipline is
unrelated to the students disability. However, even where the conduct is unrelated, the student must
continue to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) and services which allow for continued
progress in general education curriculum pursuant to an Individualized Education Program (IEP) during the
period of long-term suspension or expulsion.
ISS does not count as a long-term suspension/change of placement, as long as, the student still receives
their special education and related services from the appropriate special education staff.
