21st C App Assignment
Chosen App: Kahoots
I chose to discuss the Kahoots app for this weeks assignment. This is
an audience response app allowing the teacher to measure learning
either anonymously or publicly. Conversely, it could be offered for
students use, as well. Kahoots can be very informative and helpful to
our continuing education audiences. We recently had a nationally
renown oral pathologist with a very engaging delivery style utilize an
audience response system (ARS) to allow attendees to test their skills
at definitively diagnosing a variety of oral lesions displayed on the
screen. The ARS was used only after he had delivered his lecture
content on the process one must go through, in order to arrive at a
definitive diagnosis. This systematic approach to patient assessment
serves to improve the registrants success in choosing the correct
diagnosis during the polling. His approach to teaching draws to mind
the comparison between objectivism and constructivism in Figure 2.2
(p. 36) of the course text (Roblyer, 2013). I see this approach
(incorporating the ARS) as representative of the constructivist
approach to learning asking attendees to synthesize what they had
learned from the speaker and applying it to new situations/clinical
challenges. And finally, seeing how they themselves perform against
their peers via the ARS system, and integrating this knowledge of why

they got the correct/incorrect answer, to further refine their

technique/skills.

This type of engagement is a more active way to learn, making the

process more enjoyable for students; but, more importantly, it
challenges the learner at the very top of Blooms Taxonomy pyramid,
specifically in the areas of Analysis and Evaluation. Learners were
being asked to examine images, integrate various ideas presented by
the speaker, categorize oral lesions with the guidance of the speaker,
and support their reasons for choosing the answer they did. The
speaker would also field any further questions, to resolve any
questions that may have arisen. Lacey McEwens video tutorial offered
the most thorough and clear explanation of Blooms Taxonomy Ive
ever come across, so thank you for sharing this with the class, Daryl.
Students could use this app to prepare as a group for an upcoming test
together. Students might also want to employ this tool in taking an
anonymous poll of the class; this would be an ideal option at times
when individuals desire to maintain their anonymity. I feel that
Kahoots is a very beneficial tool with many affordances from both the
teacher and the learner perspective.
